A Part‑Time Japanese Language Instructor teaches Japanese courses for adults. Seeking instructors with extensive previous teaching experience at the university level or equivalent, for in‑person and/or online courses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Create their own teaching materials to supplement the course textbook, and follow the curriculum syllabus in coordination with other instructors.
- Communicate with students in your classes and send course materials.
- Maintain regular correspondence with Language Center staff by email for future scheduling, course updates, etc.
- Be ready to mold their teaching and create materials toward an adult audience and adapt to class needs.
- Participate in quarterly instructor meetings about improvements, program changes, and various issues.

For those interested, there may be opportunity to create new theme/content‑based courses.
There are three 10‑week core‑curriculum semesters per year, and courses meet once or twice a week. Ideally, instructors are assigned a course slot within the 10‑week semester that they continue teaching over multiple semesters. Optional:
Instructors may also be assigned non‑continuous courses during the supplemental Conversational Japanese 5‑week semesters. Each class lasts for 110/120 minutes; in‑person courses start at 12:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 6:00/6:10 p.m.; online courses start at 12:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. All times are New York time (Eastern Time).
- Bachelor’s degree. MA in a relevant field is preferred but not required.
- A minimum of one year of experience teaching Japanese language in a classroom setting is required. If not, we will not consider the application.
- Experience creating teaching materials using a variety of technology/apps (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, iPad dictionaries, etc.) and using video conferencing apps (such as Zoom, Teams) required.
- Experience using technology for teaching Japanese writing, such as a tablet and stylus, annotation, etc.
- Good oral and written English communications skills required.
- Familiarity with current teaching methods is required, and knowledge of up‑and‑coming teaching methods and technology is a plus.

$55–$85 per hour of instruction, depending on experience.
