Hours: 33 hours/week
Schedule: 8:45-3:05 PM (Mon-Thurs); 9:30-12:30 PM (Fri)
Position OverviewAssociate Instructors will join SEO's community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students. They co-teach alongside Instructors to facilitate classroom instruction, guide mini lessons, organize small group and one-on-one instruction, and provide Scholar support. When an Instructor is absent, Associate Instructors cover classes independently. They co-teach ELA and Advisory, which includes the courses “Identity & Empowerment” and “Level All,” for either 10th or 11th grade Scholars in New York City.
Key Responsibilities- Instruction & Facilitation: Co-teach three to four periods including ELA and Advisory; cover a class independently when requested; follow lesson plans and meet instructional objectives.
- Navigate Instructional Technologies: Learn and utilize Brightspace (Learning Management System), Nearpod, GSuite applications, and Zoom chat in a blended learning environment.
- Content Preparation: Read, internalize, and practice all lesson plans before teaching; adjust pacing and activities to meet student needs.
- Tutoring and Academic Support: Host open‑door lunch tutoring sessions for Scholars, review class work, and develop new skills.
- Classroom Culture: Promote a responsive and restorative learning environment that encourages student connection, investment, and positive relationships.
- Collaboration with SEO Staff and Instructors: Attend all meetings, professional development, check‑ins, and debriefs; respond to emails and Zoom chats promptly.
- Responsiveness to Coaching and Feedback: Meet at least twice with an instructional coach during the semester to receive and apply coaching feedback.
- 10th Grade Course:
Journey into FictionStudents read short fiction and analyze themes, character development, and figurative language. They develop vocabulary skills and MLA citation. The unit concludes with a literary analysis essay exploring a short story’s theme and development.
- 11th Grade Course:
Writing for Social ChangeStudents learn how writing can influence social change by reading, analyzing, and writing op‑eds. They examine rhetorical strategies, develop persuasive arguments, and identify a community issue to address with their own research‑based op‑ed.
- Advisory Courses (all grades):
- Identity & Empowerment – exploring identities, understanding systemic influences, building self‑awareness and confidence.
- Level All – college and career readiness partner program covering planning, exploration, financial literacy, and essential life skills.
- Grade‑Specific Advisory:
- 10th Grade – “The Power of My Academic Identity” & Level All.
- 11th Grade – “Identity and Motivation” & Level All.
- 10th Grade – Baruch College, Vertical Campus Building, 55 Lexington Ave., New York.
- Optional partnerships at SEO Office, 55 Exchange Place, New York, NY for orientations and Friday PD.
- Instructor Orientation – Thursday, 6/18, 5:30‑8:00 PM (Zoom).
- On‑Site Kick‑Off – Monday, 6/29.
- Friday Professional Development – July 10, 17, 24.
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a content‑related field.
- Teaching certification, K‑12 classroom teaching experience, or college‑level teaching experience.
- Reliable personal laptop that meets basic technology requirements.
- Experience working with high school‑aged students.
- Comfortable navigating technological learning systems.
- Expertise and depth of knowledge in advanced high school‑level English and Humanities subjects.
- Eagerness to discuss societal issues and challenges.
- Understanding and practice of student‑centered pedagogy.
- Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
