Bank Street School for Children is seeking dynamic, dedicated Math/Science Teachers for 5th, 6th, and 7th grade for the 2026–27 school year. Salary$60,000 – $150,000
Schedule- 10-month position covered by the Professional Employees’ Federation (PEF)
- Regular hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Mondays through Fridays, with one extended day per week until 5:00 PM on Wednesdays for faculty meetings
- Occasional overnight work (approximately one multi-night trip per year) and occasional event support (approximately four per year) that may occur during early mornings, evenings, or weekends
These positions combine subject‑area instruction with homeroom responsibilities. Math/Science Teachers are responsible for teaching math and science to their assigned grade level and serve as homeroom teachers or co‑advisors, building community and attending to the social‑emotional development of students. Grade‑level homeroom advisors engage in social‑emotional support, executive function coaching, close collaboration with a homeroom co‑advisor, and regular communication with families. We seek educators with a Master’s degree and at least three years of experience teaching upper elementary or middle school students.
Experience with student‑centered math and science curriculum and working collaboratively in a progressive school that values social justice and equity is essential.
- Math:
Arithmetic, rational number study, statistics, problem solving, and geometry - Science:
Force, motion, and simple machines; exploring variables as a function of experimental design;
Science Expo (students work in groups to design experiments and communicate findings); and geology
- Math:
Arithmetic, geometry, and elementary algebra, including fractions, decimals, percents, metric measurement, two‑dimensional geometry, and probability. We use Connected Mathematics as our foundational curriculum and supplement with teacher‑created materials. - Science:
Earth science study focusing on the sun as our source of energy, including light, the earth’s atmosphere, global climate change, and groundwater pollution
- 7th and 8th grade math is a two‑year algebra sequence. In 7th grade, the focus is on expressions, equations, exponents, linear relationships with slope and graphing, and introductory 3D geometry. The 8th grade builds upon this foundation and completes the algebra sequence.
- 7th grade science is life science, including genetics, microscopy, evolution, and human growth and development.
- 8th grade science is Introductory Physical Science (IPS), an introductory chemistry course about the properties of matter.
The following responsibilities apply across all positions, with specific duties varying by grade level:
Math and Science Instruction- Teach math and science curriculum responsive to students’ developmental capacities and needs
- Collaborate with your math/science grade‑level partner to plan curriculum and lessons
- Collaborate with the Math/Science Team and Math/Science Coordinator to develop and refine curriculum
- Document lesson plans and develop comprehensive curriculum with guidance from supervisor and in collaboration with the math/science team
- Differentiate instruction to support group and individual learning
- Utilize materials‑based discovery approaches and inquiry‑based pedagogy
- Organize and maintain a positive classroom community that reflects curricular work
- Incorporate technology into the classroom to enhance student learning
