Located on the outskirts of Lake Placid, NY, Camp Treetops and North Country School sit on a 333-acre campus amid majestic mountain peaks in New York State’s Adirondack Park. Position OverviewNorth Country School seeks a School Counselor for the school year. In this role, you will support students’ social, emotional, and psychological well-being through individual counseling and collaboration with faculty, families, and external providers.
What You Will DoAs a vital member of the Mental Health Team, you will manage approximately 50% of the school’s caseload and serve as the counselor-on-call. Beyond direct clinical support, you will facilitate a year-long well-being course and contribute to the development of school-wide programming.
How You Will Spend Your Time Caseload Management (60%)Provide individual and group counseling to students, managing a significant portion of the school’s counseling caseload. Develop and implement tailored interventions to support students’ emotional and mental health needs. Coordinate with families and outside providers to schedule and facilitate calls and sessions with students.
Facilitate a well-being course for students, promoting social-emotional learning, resilience, and self-awareness.
Counselor-On-Call (15%)Serve as counselor-on-call for urgent student mental health needs and crises, providing timely and appropriate support.
Program Support (15%)Collaborate with the NCS team, under the direction of the Director of School, to support school-wide initiatives, contribute to program development, and assist in maintaining a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment, including reviewing student admission files throughout the school year and summer. This role in a boarding school community includes weekend and evening duties throughout the school year.
Qualifications:- Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in School Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
- Preferred Qualifications: LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor), or NYS School Counselor Certification.
- Additional Assets: Experience in residential or outdoor education settings
- Educational Background: Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a related field is required; licensure as LCSW, LMHC, NYS School Counselor Certification preferred. Your education provides a solid foundation in mental health practices, developmental psychology, and evidence-based interventions for children and adolescents.
- Experience with Youth: Proven experience working with children and adolescents in a school, camp, or similar supportive environment. You are skilled at building rapport with young people, understanding their developmental and emotional needs, and implementing strategies that foster growth, resilience, and well-being.

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex mental health concepts in an accessible and supportive way. You can collaborate effectively with students, families, faculty, and staff, ensuring clarity, empathy, and trust in all interactions. - Collaboration & Teamwork: A strong team player who thrives in collaborative environments. You are comfortable working alongside teachers, administrators, and other mental health professionals to create a unified approach to student support.
