ResponsibilitiesThe Graduate Research Assistant position is designed to support the early stages of a faculty research project examining the historical experiences and contributions of African American women in wartime initiatives during World War II. Grounded in an interdisciplinary framework that integrates fashion studies, cultural studies, and social history, the project investigates how visual media, dress practices, and material culture shaped intersections of race, gender, labor, and citizenship.
The primary purpose of this role is to help build the intellectual, historiographical, and archival foundation necessary for the project’s long-term development. Through literature synthesis, primary source identification, research mapping, and organizational infrastructure, the RA contributes to clarifying key themes, identifying scholarly interventions, and locating relevant visual and textual evidence.
- Searching for grant opportunities and identifying those that align with the project.
- Reviewing grant requirements and deadlines.
- Working with the faculty member to draft materials in preparation for a full grant proposal(s).
- Providing reviews of literature, budget preparation, and formatting and compliance checking for grant writing.
- Contributing meaningfully to high-quality proposal development to secure external funding.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between SENS - UAW, Local 7902 and the University.
Work Mode- Hybrid/Remote – Employees hired for this position primarily work remotely with the occasional on-campus presence required with advanced notice. Employees in this role will also be expected to use their best judgment to be on campus when necessary in order to best fulfill the responsibilities of their job descriptions.
Hourly Rate: $31.37/hour.
Minimum Qualifications- Must demonstrate strong research and writing skills in the English language.
- Must demonstrate strong organizational skills.
- Has an interest in grant writing.
- Has an interest in fashion history studies and/or exhibition curation (preferred but not required).
- Active library card with the New York Public Library.
- Coursework or research experience in fashion/dress history or material culture.
- Has prior experience with grant writing (preferred but not required).
