Annual Salary Range: $70,000–$89,000
Responsibilities- Plan and implement high-quality, engaging English lessons (including literature, grammar, writing, and vocabulary development) that are differentiated to meet the learning needs of students.
- Regularly assess students and curriculum, adapting content and instruction as appropriate; communicating assessment results to parents.
- Subscribe to and implement the school’s philosophy of progressive and personalized education for twice-exceptional children.
- Collaborate with psychosocial teachers in planning and implementing an integrated program for executive functioning within the academic curriculum.
- Map and evaluate curriculum.
- Collaborate with other members of the English Language Arts department to ensure a vertically aligned K-12 English program.
- Develop and teach electives.
- Create and maintain an orderly and aesthetic learning environment that accounts for students’ social, emotional, and executive functioning needs.
- Maintain accurate records using both the learning management system Veracross and student portfolios to illustrate progress and achievement.
- Empower students to take charge of their learning by providing scaffolding, modeling, materials, and resources, and consistently maintaining a high level of expectation.
- Collaborate with other academic and psychosocial staff to plan, integrate, and facilitate cross-curricular, inquiry-based projects.
- Communicate with parents and guardians to provide feedback on academic and social–emotional progress through conferences, written reports, phone calls, and emails.
- Follow the professional code and policies of the school and conduct oneself in a way that promotes the mission.
- Utilize Google Suite, particularly Drive, Docs, and Sheets.
- Attend all faculty and staff meetings, professional development sessions, and required special events (including open houses, Curriculum Night, Carnivale).
- Perform other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, serving as an academic advisor and/or leading a student club during the school day.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in English education, special education, English, or a related field.
- At least one year of experience teaching English to middle and/or high school students or college undergraduates.
Education and Experience
- At least three years experience as a full‑time middle or high school English teacher.
- Experience using the Hochman Method to teach writing.
- Master’s degree in English education, special education, English, or a related field.
- Special education training, including training in gifted education and twice‑exceptional youth.
- Secondary English and/or Special Education teaching credential.
- Experience teaching twice‑exceptional youth.
The role operates in a school setting located primarily on the ground, fifth, and sixth floors. It may involve moving between various locations and occasional travel to the Lower School campus approximately two blocks away.
Physical DemandsRequires standing, walking, and climbing stairs continuously. Occasional lifting/moving of items under 20 pounds. Typing required. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
Position Type and HoursFull‑time exempt. Work schedule Monday‑Friday 8 am‑4 pm with a ten‑month school year. Occasional evening or weekend duties may be required, at least three events throughout the year.
