The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time, visiting professor (rank to be determined) to be appointed for the academic year, which may be renewable during the following academic year.
As the Newsday/David Laventhol Visiting Professor, the incumbent will:
- Stress diversity in media issues.
- Contribute to the Master of Science program, including teaching a foundational Reporting or Writing course, a course in data or video journalism, and/or a seminar in their specialty area.
- Supervise Master’s projects and advise students.
- Contribute to the Master of Arts program, the data degree, and the dual degree journalism and computer science programs.
- Leverage a substantial publishing record and experience as a teacher, writer, and editor.
- Apply demonstrated experience with video journalism or qualitative and quantitative reporting, including methods in data collection, analysis, and visualization, if preferred.
Qualifications and requirements:
- Candidate must currently hold an appointment at another academic institution.
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Substantial publishing record.
- Experience teaching, writing, and editing.
- Preferred experience in video journalism or data journalism.
- Ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students.
The visiting professorship will begin no earlier than July 1, 2024, pending administrative approval.
Pay Transparency DisclosureThe salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
- Hiring Salary Range: $100,000 - $120,000
- Assistant Professor: $100,000 - $110,000
- Associate Professor: $105,000 - $115,000
- Professor: $110,000 - $120,000
