Job Title

Stellar Farmers Markets Bilingual Educator (Mandarin and/or Cantonese)

Job Type and Schedule

Temporary, part‑time; up to 14‑16 hours per week. Works from July 21 to November 22, 2026, including weekly Monday meetings from 1 to 4 pm and additional shifts from Tuesday to Sunday as needed.

Location

On‑site at NYC farmers markets, farm stands, or Health Centers; monthly meetings in Long Island City, Queens.

About the Role

Bilingual Educators fluent in English/Mandarin and/or Cantonese will join a team of three or more to assist with the preparation and delivery of bilingual nutrition and cooking workshops at farmers markets, farm stands, and Health Centers from August to November 2026.

About the Program

The Stellar Farmers Markets (SFM) program is a 17‑week nutrition education opportunity that engages New Yorkers in interactive workshops at underserved neighborhoods. The goal is to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables by enhancing knowledge and skills in healthy eating.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in a required, paid 5‑day training in July 2026 (7/21, 7/22, 7/24, 7/27, 7/28).
  • Attend monthly Monday afternoon staff meetings at the Health Department office.
  • Collaborate with a team—including a Nutrition Educator and a Culinary Educator—to plan and deliver bilingual nutrition education workshops and cooking demonstrations.
  • Prepare for and orally interpret in‑person workshops and cooking demos from English to Mandarin and/or Cantonese; translate written signage and educational messaging when able.
  • Support the Nutrition Educator with session preparation and implementation, survey distribution, and completion.
  • Assist the Culinary Educator with food‑preparation tasks between workshops.
  • Help set up and break down the tent, cooking equipment, and educational materials.
  • Follow the curriculum and maintain program integrity and fidelity.
  • Participate in marketing and promotion of programming to achieve desired participation levels.
  • Maintain all safety protocols and encourage environmentally sustainable practices at workshop sites.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the overall goals of the department.
Qualifications
  • Oral fluency in English & Mandarin and/or Cantonese.
  • Dynamic personality with excellent presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations.
  • Commitment to teamwork and effective communication practices.
  • Willing and able to stand for long periods of time and work outside, including in inclement weather.
  • Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Ability to write in Spanish and translate written materials from English to Mandarin and/or Cantonese.
  • Experience interpreting information orally from English to Spanish.
  • Experience working as part of a team.
  • Understanding of and experience with regional food systems, food security issues, and health inequities in NYC communities.
  • Strong preference for those with knowledge about and interest in nutrition and community food security issues in NYC.
Physical Requirements
  • Willing and able to stand for long periods of time and work outside in inclement weather.
  • Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds on market days.
Additional Information
  • This position is contingent upon final confirmation of funding, anticipated by June 30, 2026.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Position will be hired through a staffing agency.
  • Not a remote job; most responsibilities require on‑site or in‑office work.
