Job OverviewThis full‑time, non‑exempt position at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm in Canton, New York, serves as the Day Camp Assistant Director and as the After School Site Supervisor. The Assistant Director works closely with the Program Director and staff to maintain safety, cleanliness, and educational quality for camp participants and to provide 4‑H youth development opportunities. In the absence of the Director the Assistant Director manages the camp and oversees all program operations, including student care, daily schedules, attendance, and record keeping.
ResponsibilitiesKey responsibilities include program delivery, safety oversight, staff supervision, and administrative support:
- Teach and lead existing 4‑H educational programs in environmental science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) for after‑school participants.
- Assist the Site Director in lesson‑plan creation, classroom instruction, and the implementation of innovative educational programs.
- Monitor staff and student activity, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide behavioral support for campers.
- Maintain daily schedules, attendance records, health logs, and visitor logs in the absence of the Site Director.
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities, identify hazards, and recommend corrective actions.
- Coordinate special projects such as inventory, program outreach, marketing initiatives, and family literacy events.
- Participate in required trainings for School Age Child Care (SACC) and Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) licensing, including orientation, health screening, and risk‑management reporting.
- Prepare end‑of‑season reviews and recommendations for the following season.
- Minimum age of 21 years as required by the New York State Department of Health.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education (Associate’s degree plus two years of transferable experience) in childcare, education, or a related field.
- At least one year of leadership experience in a program setting.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications acceptable to the New York State Department of Health as a Camp Health Designee, or the ability to obtain them.
- Valid New York State driver’s license and ability to meet travel requirements.
- Proficient computer skills and familiarity with radio, telephone, and registration/attendance software.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessary.
- Comfortable working in a camp environment with farm animals.
- Camp experience and experience working with children and young adults.
- Capacity to plan, develop, organize, and carry out a camp health‑care plan and maintain appropriate records.
- Strong communication skills across diverse age groups, with patience, sense of humor, and self‑control.
- Professional demeanor and ability to follow guidance and supervision.
- Experience preparing and teaching classes and using multi‑media instructional tools.
Hourly rate: $22.00. Full‑time, 40 hours per week. Comprehensive benefits include health and dental insurance, retirement, vacation, sick and personal leave.
