NURSERY GROUP TEACHER

We are excited to invite a warm, nurturing, and attentive Nursery Group Teacher to join our team! Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is searching for a Nursery Group Teacher to care for a classroom of young children, ages 12 to 24 months, in the Early Childhood Education Center at our Families w/ Children facility located in the Jamaica area of Queens, NY.

In this role, you will support infant/young toddlers by meeting their developmental needs through responsive caregiving, play, and early learning activities.
This position is per diem, working as needed without a fixed schedule. Join us and be a part of an organization that values your contribution and cares deeply for the community we serve.

ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS:

Homes for the Homeless operates shelters for families experiencing homelessness in NYC. Our family residences are more than just a place to sleep. Families can make the most of their stay through accessing an array of onsite programs. Many of these programs are also available to people living in the local community. Our goal is to have a positive impact so families can thrive long after they leave our shelters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with the program director on daily lesson planning and curriculum development.
  • Create and maintain a child‑centered, literacy‑focused learning environment.
  • Supervise children at all times, ensuring their safety and well‑being.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate educational, physical, and hygienic care.
  • Assist with the day‑to‑day maintenance and organization of the classroom.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including answering phones, processing enrollment forms, tracking children’s progress, and preparing reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Hold an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or
  • Hold a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and have a study plan to obtain an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education within 7 years;
    or
  • Hold a high school diploma, have 9 college credits in Early Childhood Education, and have a study plan to obtain an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education within 7 years;
    or
  • Hold a high school diploma and have 5 years of supervised experience in an infant‑toddler classroom (if currently employed in a program);
    or
  • Hold a high school diploma, have a study plan leading to 9 college credits in Early Childhood Education within 2 years, and have a study plan to obtain an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education within 7 years.
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to work an as‑needed, per diem schedule.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to sit on the floor, bend, and pick up children throughout an eight‑hour shift.
  • Ability to safely monitor active children, including sudden standing, walking, moving, and lifting.
