Job Description

Have you enjoyed mentoring students, interns, or early-career professionals throughout your career? Are you looking for meaningful part-time work that helps students build confidence, explore career paths, and prepare for life after college?

Position Summary

Hamilton College has long been a leader in higher education, with the Maurice Horowitch Career Center driving that impact. Through the launch of Career Communities, the Center has unified its strengths: industry-specific coaching and employer and alumni connections, and our foundational career development curriculum, into a cohesive model that supports students from exploration through outcomes. We are seeking a part‑time Career Advisor to join our collaborative team and support students as they explore career options, develop professional skills, and pursue internships, jobs, and graduate school opportunities.

Candidates who bring experience in one or more Hamilton career communities (Finance/Consulting, Government & Law, Social Impact, Technology, Arts & Communications, Science & Health, or Education) are especially encouraged. This is a part‑time position with a flexible schedule working approximately 15–17 hours per week (maximum 909 hours annually).

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary career coach for an assigned cohort of students.
  • Help students assess their interests, skills, and values and connect them to potential career paths.
  • Coach students in their search for internships, jobs, research opportunities, and other career‑related experiences.
  • Provide guidance on resumes, cover letters, interviewing, networking, graduate school applications, and salary negotiation.
  • Help students develop and execute long‑term career plans.
  • Translate industry knowledge and professional experience into practical guidance for students.
  • Design and deliver workshops and presentations on career development topics.
  • Assist students in leveraging Handshake, Linked In, My Hamilton Connect, and other technologies to build networks and pursue opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Career Center colleagues on communications, programming, and student engagement efforts.
  • Support a culture of access, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of career education.
Time Allocation
  • Career Coaching & Student Engagement: 90%
  • Program Planning & Implementation: 10%
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required; relevant advanced degree preferred.
  • 3–5 years of professional experience in a non‑academic field required.
Preferred
  • Experience working with college students or in a higher education setting.
  • Experience mentoring, training, supervising, or developing others.
  • Comfort learning and leveraging new technologies, including AI‑enabled tools, to enhance student engagement and career education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to build rapport and establish productive coaching relationships with students.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of career exploration, professional development, and workplace success strategies.
  • Ability to translate professional experience into actionable guidance for students.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while managing responsibilities independently.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
Compensation Range

$25.00 – $28.00 per hour
