Job Title: Academic Program Specialist
Location: School of Labor & Urban Studies
Position Overview
The School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) Worker Education program partners with unions, community-based organizations, employers, and other CUNY units to provide academic and administrative support to union workers, working adults, and nontraditional students. The program helps participants earn degrees or certificates within CUNY, strengthen their skills, and improve career opportunities.
Program Specialist Role
Reporting to the LTT Program Manager, the Program Specialist provides frontline support for LTT services at designated CUNY campuses. Key responsibilities include outreach and recruitment, academic advising, student advocacy, coordination with support services, data tracking, and collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Lead the daily academic and administrative onsite operations on behalf of Program Manager; provide regular updates on program activities, collaborate with team members at different sites and attend site/team meetings
- Assist in the development and implementation of new, targeted training programs to enhance student growth and experience
- Provide academic advisement to students from preadmission through graduation; methods include in-person, online, and/or phone sessions
- Assist the team in the development and utilization of an effective communication strategy using both print and online resources, such as social media
- Bachelor's Degree and four years' relevant experience required.
- Master’s degree in education, higher education administration, psychology, counseling, or a related field
- Experience in higher education, adult education/worker education, or PreK–12 public school systems
- Strong organizational, communication, presentation, time management, and planning skills with high attention to detail
- Demonstrated experience in academic advising and supporting student success
- Proficiency with student information systems (e.g., CUNYfirst, Degree Works)
- Knowledge of New York State teacher certification requirements, education majors, and teacher certification exams
- Proficiency with Zoom, Microsoft Office 365 (especially Excel, Teams, SharePoint, and PowerPoint),and Dropbox, with willingness to learn new platforms
- Ability to work a flexible schedule and travel throughout the five borough
$74,490-$86,741 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
