Overview

At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof.

By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

Broome Street Academy (BSA) is our on‑site tuition‑free public charter high school devoted to providing students the necessary skills and support to graduate prepared for a successful future beyond high school. Together, The Door and BSA are implementing a Community Schools initiative to develop and implement sustainable best practices for improved student attendance and academic success, student and caregiver engagement, and academic achievement.

The SYEP Program Coordinator is a Door employee 100% dedicated to BSA students serving as part of an inter‑disciplinary team of staff from both organizations. S/he serves as the program director for The Door’s school‑based Summer Youth Employment Program.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Door and BSA staff to recruit new businesses and organizations for quality work‑based learning opportunities for students.
  • Maintain lists of businesses/industries willing to participate in work‑based learning; collaborate and liaise with The Door’s Career Services team for opportunities.
  • Partner with Door and BSA staff to assess, screen, interview, select, and place qualified students into work‑based learning experiences based on their career interests and program of study.
  • Oversee administrative implementation of the SYEP program.
  • Ensure accurate submission of enrollment, payroll, and evaluations of SYEP participants, including all physical paperwork and data entry.
  • Monitor SYEP activities including recruitment, registration, and collection of documentation, orientation, payroll, and program implementation.
  • Conduct pre‑assessments and weekly assessments of work sites during the summer program, traveling as needed.
  • Plan, coordinate, and assist with facilitation of work‑readiness training workshops and participant orientation.
  • Facilitate participant payroll orientation.
  • Monitor and review incident reports and inform DYCD of all incidents.
  • Prepare, review, and edit written materials as needed for correspondence, brochures, and agendas.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and materials to support the Summer Youth Employment Program.
  • Participate in professional development and external meetings and conferences, including DYCD meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Urban Policy, Education or a related field strongly preferred or extensive related professional experience.
  • Knowledgeable of and able to apply positive youth development principles while working with young people.
  • At least 3 years of experience coordinating summer youth employment programs, including supervising or managing such programs.
  • Experience establishing industry and community partnerships.
  • Knowledge of work‑based learning initiatives, including career counseling.
  • Prior experience working with vulnerable youth populations (foster care, court‑involved, runaway and homeless, teen parents, etc.).
  • Prior experience creating and facilitating work‑based learning workshops and trainings.
  • Demonstrated understanding and practice of the principles of positive youth development.
