Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: College Tutor / Advisor (Full-Time, Lived Experience of Foster Care Required)
Location: New York

At the Table is seeking educators to join our growing organization and contribute to a diverse, committed team that is passionate about connecting students currently and formerly in foster care with the academic resources they deserve.

Important note on qualifications: for this hiring cycle, we are only accepting new applicants with lived experience of foster care. This means you must have personally been placed in foster care at some point in your life - professional experience working in and around the foster system is not, on its own, sufficient to meet this requirement. If you have questions about this requirement, you can email info.

At the Table pairs college students who have experienced foster care with 1:1 educators who earn roles as trusted advisors in navigating college life.
At the Table tutoring is a long-term, full-time position: our educator / advisors meet with students until they graduate and we take care not to change pairings wherever possible. At the Table educators serve caseloads of up to 17 students.

We conduct the vast majority of our tutoring and advising sessions remotely, but candidates must be able to attend in-person staff meetings once per month and meet with other staff or their students in person as needed. The role may include some weekend or evening work.

At the Table offers a competitive benefits package including health insurance, life insurance, 401k match, paid time off, and PFL / disability insurance.

Role Responsibilities Tutoring and Advising
  • Meet with a caseload of 15-17 students for 1-2 hours weekly for tutoring and advising.
  • Build supportive, collaborative relationships with students while tailoring your approach to their needs and goals.
  • Assist students with classes across all core subject areas (including STEM and humanities) as well as educational skills such as time management.
  • Provide individualized academic advising in course selection, degree planning, and major exploration.
  • Submit session feedback after each student session.
  • Monitor student progress and collect academic data, such as course grades.
  • Make proactive and consistent outreach to students to follow up on assignments, offer encouragement, resolve challenges, and engage students who are struggling to attend.
  • When a student needs resources inside or outside the classroom (e.g. housing support or disability accommodations), collaborate with the student, supervisor, and At the Table's College Navigator to problem-solve and coordinate an appropriate referral.
Professional Development
  • Participate in coaching, caseload review, and mock tutoring to keep instructional, advising, and student engagement skills sharp.
  • Identify areas for academic self‑improvement and proactively make a plan for self‑study.
  • Engage in continuous learning about relevant topics, such as current trends in higher education, the foster system, and educational theory and pedagogy.
Organizational Development
  • Participate in discussions and provide feedback on organizational decision‑making.
  • Contribute to projects that advance program goals and student success.
  • Support and develop At the Table's values.
Who We’re Looking For
  • Candidates for this role must hold a bachelor’s degree and be able to tutor effectively across all core subjects including English and Math. For this hiring cycle, new applicants must have lived experience of foster care (see note above). We are also looking for the following qualities and experiences:
  • Previous experience as a teacher, tutor, mentor, or counselor for youth or young adults, or similar.
  • Patient, committed to cultivating a growth mindset, and believes in the importance of relationship-building.
  • Student‑centered instructional style.
  • Self‑reflective and able to quickly integrate feedback/lessons learned into tutoring sessions.
  • Organized, manages time well, and uses unstructured time effectively.
  • Excited about contributing to a growing team and expanding nonprofit.

At the Table is an equal opportunity employer. We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, marital status, citizenship, national origin, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law.
