Introduction
Henry Street Settlement is like no other organization, and our positions are not ordinary jobs. Every day Henry Street’s dedicated team carries out a 130‑year blueprint of service to our community established by our founder, Lillian Wald, in 1893.
Overview Organizational Overview:Henry Street Settlement opens doors of opportunity to enrich lives and expand human progress for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social services, arts, and health care programs. Building on its 125+year legacy of innovation and effective programming, Henry Street offers more than 50 programs and is one of New York City’s largest social service agencies.
Program Overview:Henry Street Settlement’s Education and Employment Division has programs to help individuals obtain the skills for lifelong economic self‑sufficiency. The ABE/HSE Program helps more than 115 adult learners each year to prepare to take the GED exam. We currently provide three levels of instruction in each of the test’s five subject areas (Social Studies, Science, Reading, Writing and Math) for those with reading grade levels ranging from 4th through 12th.
Each learner comes to the program with their own educational experiences and goals. They range in age from 18 to 60+, live across the five boroughs and include both native English speakers and English language learners. We work hard to be participant‑focused in our approach and to help each student identify and work toward reaching their own learning goals.
