Substitute Bilingual Lead Culinary Instructor (Spanish)
OpportunityHot Bread Kitchen is seeking a Substitute Culinary Instructor to facilitate the delivery of our workforce training programs on an as‑needed, on‑call basis to provide temporary support for our culinary team. Our hands‑on kitchen training programs range from 5 to 8 weeks with up to 33 participants per cohort. The ideal candidate is fluent in English and Spanish, has a background in the restaurant industry and culinary education, and is available for 1 day or multi‑week assignments throughout the year.
They must possess exemplary culinary skills, patience, and the ability to convey cooking knowledge effectively to participants with varying skill levels. This role works alongside an instructional team of up to two other staff.
- Review curriculum and recipes to plan instruction.
- Manage all relevant preparation activities, including readying the kitchen, preparing ingredients, conducting demonstrations, and organizing kitchen equipment.
- Facilitate the established curriculum with other culinary instructional staff, ensuring that planned recipes and techniques are taught effectively.
- Provide demonstrations of cooking techniques and deliver clear and concise instructions to participants.
- Teach and enforce proper safety and sanitation practices in the kitchen.
- Supervise participants during cooking and provide hands‑on feedback and assessment.
- Work 1:1 with participants to provide skill and technical support.
- Oversee cleanup and preparation for the following day of training, including storage of leftover ingredients, organization of equipment, and kitchen sanitation.
- Communicate with Hot Bread Kitchen Program staff about participant issues, concerns, and successes.
- Participate in case conferences about participants, as needed.
- Complete weekly participant assessment surveys, as needed.
- Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission.
- Fluent in both English and Spanish (required).
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in a restaurant kitchen as a cook.
- Minimum of 1 year of teaching/training experience in a culinary setting.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and counsel people.
- Exemplary organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- General computer proficiency (preferred).
- Ability to stand on feet for up to eight hours.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Valid New York City Food Handlers License.

This position requires in‑person attendance at our facility in Chelsea Market or at one of our outpost locations. Hours and days will vary depending on program coverage. Must be willing to accept assignments on short notice (less than 24 hours, on occasion).
CompensationHourly compensation: $65/hour. This rate includes additional compensation for Spanish-language fluency.
