What is the Role?

Coney Island Prep welcomes candidates who are passionate about instructing and advocating for K-2nd grade scholars with disabilities. The teacher supports students’ high‑quality education through accommodations and services within all tiers of academic programming, promotes inclusion and equity, and uses data to inform Individualized Education Plan decisions and instructional improvement.

What You’ll Be Asked To Do
  • Internalize standards‑aligned curriculum and, daily, teach academic‑rigorous and culturally relevant lesson plans, materials, and assessments, differentiating as needed.
  • Provide a safe, welcoming, and joyful learning environment for our youngest learners.
  • Communicate effectively with all scholars, their families, and staff.
  • Commit to a culture of consistently implementing school‑wide systems, structures, and procedures.
  • Eliminate the effects of racism, poverty, and other forms of oppression by making resources, opportunities, and classrooms equitable and accessible.
  • Analyze instructional and culture data to action‑plan and improve teaching practice and strengthen student outcomes.
  • Create a positive, structured, results‑oriented, and enjoyable learning environment supporting students with various abilities and experiences.
  • Lead and participate in community‑building experiences, including bus duty, home visits, enrollment events, IEP meetings, lunch duty, arrivals, dismissals, hallway duties, daily homeroom, weekly advisory groups, content team meetings, whole‑staff professional development, lesson practice, and grade team meetings.
  • Model consistent Tier 1 systems across classrooms and throughout the school to create a safe, predictable, and nurturing environment, using weekly behavior and suspension data to inform culture‑building decisions.
  • Coach and support students through restorative practices that foster empathy, belonging, and strong positive relationships.
What You’ll Need
  • Passion for education and dedication to Coney Island Prep’s mission, beliefs, and values, including anti‑racism.
  • Steadfast belief that all students can achieve at the highest academic levels and deserve opportunities to succeed in their chosen college and career paths.
  • Bachelor’s degree and NYS teaching certification required;
    Master’s degree strongly preferred (we offer $2,000 toward a Master’s degree and NY State certification within two years of employment).
  • Cultural competencies and willingness to examine your beliefs and biases across lines of difference.
  • Culturally responsive and age‑appropriate conflict resolution skills.
  • Proven organizational, oral, and written communication skills including punctuality, accuracy, and consistent communication.
  • Content knowledge of literacy practices.
  • Self‑reflective, open to feedback, and driven to implement learnings for personal development.
  • A positive, solution‑oriented attitude.
  • Eagerness to collaborate with coaches and grade teams.
  • Track record of building positive relationships with families, students, and staff, demonstrating commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
Benefits and Compensation
  • Salary range: $71,250–$97,750, determined by years of lead teaching experience and equity considerations.
  • Eligibility for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan with match, and Paid Family Leave.
  • Provision of a Mac Book Air and all essential technology and resources.

Coney Island Prep Lower Elementary School blends joy, rigor, and high expectations to prepare 320 scholars in K‑2. With one teacher in every classroom, we maintain low teacher‑to‑student ratios to accelerate learning and tailor instruction. Our science‑of‑reading curriculum emphasizes phonics, word recognition, vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension skills.
