Position Summary

The Assistant to Student & Community Life is responsible for ensuring the well-being and safety of Secondary students while upholding community rules and agreements throughout the portion of the school day they oversee.

They support students in being their best selves, uphold rules and regulations, support student respect and responsibility, and oversee daily activities, attendance, social interactions, and student spaces during their free time and recess.

They collaborate with various staff members and students to provide necessary support.

They support an inclusive school by helping the Secondary Student & Community Life department with additional duties such as maintaining a clean environment and helping with duties such as decorating, set up and strike for special daytime events, and oversee student recess and special activities. The Assistant should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be a team player, be able to work well under pressure, and believe in the school's mission and multicultural environment.

The Assistant to Student & Community Life should be a self‑starting, resourceful, well‑organized team player with the ability to work well under pressure and to demonstrate good interpersonal skills. All employees are expected to maintain a collegial work environment that fosters healthy team dynamics, collaboration and in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity.

As such, the ability to get along with diverse personalities is a necessary skill. All employees are strongly encouraged to work towards proficiency in both French and English languages and to develop a familiarity and understanding of both cultures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

General Guidelines

The Assistant to Student & Community Life’s responsibilities include the following, but are not limited to:

Student Safety
  • Active supervision of the floor, entrance and exit during student lunch period, between class periods and at the end of the day, on a rotation to be determined by the department.
  • Supervising the effective use of the Yondr system.
  • Supervising student exams and individual work.
  • Supervising student activities as determined by the Dean of Students.
  • Supervise the students during their snacks and lunch periods: cafeteria, lobby, mezzanine, gym, drive‑thru or other areas of the school.
  • In case of no backup for a teacher’s/ advisor's absence, backup supervision for a class.
  • Walk through the breathing spaces.
  • Uphold school expectations for inclusion and belonging.
  • Maintain respectful communication.
  • Participate in decorating and maintaining the space in collaboration with the department.
  • Oversee student stewardship of the space.
  • Encourage active participation on the part of the students.
  • Support the occasional student service project.
  • Oversee an occasional Tier‑1 disciplinary intervention.
  • Immediately communicate Tier‑2 disciplinary situations to the Grade Coordinator.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Demonstrate support for the school’s mission.
  • Create a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Prepare and implement challenging, rigorous, and motivating learning experiences that are effective for multilingual learners.
  • Prepare and implement age appropriate co‑curricular school day activities including recess, assemblies, etc.
  • Foster a healthy professional culture by interacting and collaborating with, as well as supporting, colleagues in a respectful and collegial manner.
