PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER (K-5)

Family Life Academy Charter School (FLACS) is a non‑profit network of high‑performing charter schools located in the South Bronx. FLACS is guided by a mission to empower all K‑12 students academically, socially, and emotionally, and it seeks educators who share a commitment to excellence and activism in education.

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the school principal, the Physical Education Teacher is responsible for implementing and promoting a physical education curriculum that includes exercise, organized games, and challenges appropriate for each grade level. The teacher motivates students to achieve age‑appropriate physical fitness, fosters social and emotional adjustment, and implements dual and team activities and sports. They develop motor skills, strength, agility, poise, and coordination, and facilitate the successful implementation of FLACS physical education curriculum aligned with New York State Physical Education Learning Standards.

The role includes responsiveness to diverse learning needs of all students, including general education, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners. The teacher works with school administrators to implement procedures and policies, and communicates with parents, guardians, and caregivers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of grade‑level physical education activities, including individual, dual, and/or team sports.
  • Develop innovative instructional methodologies reflecting research and best practices to engage students, while ensuring health and safety and protecting equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Plan, prepare, and facilitate daily standards‑based lessons that differentiate instruction for diverse needs.
  • Integrate literacy skills across physical education, including explicit vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking, and listening standards.
  • Establish a culture of learning to engage students in rigorous standards‑based curriculum.
  • Design and implement assessments that measure progress toward physical education standards.
  • Use assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practice, supporting data‑driven decision making.
  • Create a respectful, caring, and orderly classroom environment that nurtures unique student needs.
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum development, professional learning communities, grade‑level activities, and school‑wide functions.
  • Maintain effective communication with parents regarding student strengths and challenge areas.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree is preferred.
  • Prior satisfactory teaching experience preferred.
  • New York State Certification in Physical Education (all grades).
  • Clearance for fingerprint and criminal background check.
