CHFS is a community-based, family-focused organization of color providing an array of services to children and families in Brooklyn and Queens. For over 35 years, CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children, youth, and families at risk of abuse and neglect. Our strength-based model also supports progressive youth development programs, family support services and community school partnerships, The provision of accessible, high-quality family focused services to families of color is central to our holistic approach of strengthening families in a culturally competent manner.

The CHFS Arts & Literacy Youth Development Program is an innovative and comprehensive after school and summer program serving Brooklyn and Queens youth ages 5-14. We provide education, creative arts, youth leadership, and health programming. The program builds leadership and literacy through creative writing, visual arts, drama, photography, video, music, Yoga, sports, martial arts, creative movement/dance, and apprenticeships. We engage entire families through monthly family literacy workshops, parent organizing, and comprehensive services available through the agency's other programs.
POSITION SUMMARY:The CHFS Arts & Literacy Program Director is a dynamic and visionary youth development leader with
both arts' education and management experience. They are responsible for all aspects of running the
arts after school program including but not limited to maintaining a safe, positive after school program;
planning events for youth and families; supervision of program content and staff; staff training and
development; DYCD outcomes and reporting as well as staff development. At times, the Program
Director steps into the classroom to teach or co-teach as they train their instructors. They can review
and edit lesson plans, model good teaching, and classroom management for their staff. They serve as a
liaison between teaching staff and the CHFS agency, partner schools, and other community
organizations. The Program Director builds community by developing relationships with families and
fostering family engagement through regular communication and events. The Program Director forms
positive relationships with the youth and nurtures an environment where all students are able to
develop creatively and academically.
RESPONSIBILITIES:Program Management and Compliance
- Tailor CHFS Arts & Literacy after school model to meet community needs
- Responsible for overseeing all aspects of programming - ensuring stable, organized, safe and effective program operations that meet CHFS, DYCD and DOH regulations and requirements
- Be knowledgeable of and implement all safety, security and emergency policies and procedures per CHFS, DOH and/or DYCD regulations
- Ensure quality programming is being offered and staffing ratios meet DYCD and DOH requirements
- Oversee a fair and equitable enrollment and participation process for children, youth, and adults that meets the DYCD regulations and requirements
- Ensure that all participants have completed applications and supplemental forms, and adhere to sign-in/sign-out policies
- Follow all agency and program policies and procedures as described in the Agency Handbook, program Policies and Procedures, and the Program Director Manual.
