Fencing Specialist
New York Edge is looking for passionate and enthusiastic individuals to fill the role of Fencing Specialist. In this position, you will be critical in providing tailored, age-appropriate coaching and mentoring to young people in New York Edge's after-school day camp programs. As a Fencing Specialist, you will organize and lead fencing activities, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
Work Schedule:
Essential Job Functions:
- Motivate students to engage in fencing activities and promote daily physical fitness.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that are structured, age-appropriate, and align with our fencing curriculum, focusing on skills such as footwork, lunging, and blade control.
- Maintain communication with the Program Director regarding schedules, competitions, and special events, including local tournaments and fencing exhibitions.
- Encourage student participation in organization-wide fencing events and activities.
- Establish and enforce safety rules and procedures to maintain order among participants, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and respect.
- Instruct participants on fencing techniques, including attacking, defending, and scoring, while ensuring proper use of equipment such as masks, jackets, and fencing weapons.
- Set clear lesson objectives and communicate these goals to students, focusing on skill development and tactical understanding.
- Prepare facilities for fencing practices and matches, ensuring the area is safe and properly equipped.
- Evaluate activities to ensure they meet desired learning outcomes and adapt to accommodate varying skill levels.
- Foster the development of athletic skills and positive character traits, such as discipline, focus, and resilience among youth.
- Provide support during academic hours as needed.
Required Skills:
- Knowledge and experience in fencing, with a background in coaching or instruction preferred.
- Prior experience teaching or mentoring youth is highly desirable.
- Ability to follow a structured curriculum while adapting to meet participants' needs.
- Responsible, reliable, and punctual.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required; some college preferred.
- A minimum of one year of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.
- A minimum of one year of teaching or coaching experience is required.
- Must have passion for New York Edge's mission and demonstrated interest in education and youth development.
- Candidates qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity are also preferred.
The Sports Specialist will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration. At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
