The Noble Maritime Collection seeks motivated, energetic educators for its growing education department. The museum offers programs for pre-k through high school students at the museum on the campus of Snug Harbor Cultural Center and in schools throughout New York City. The programs use visual arts to teach about New York’s maritime history and industry. Students engage in a history lesson and use watercolors and a printing press to depict scenes of the waterfront.
The museum’s Director of Programs provides training.
Hourly Rate: $25 per hour
Responsibilities- Lead maritime-themed arts education classes including printmaking, watercolors, storytelling, and gallery tours for preschool through 12th-grade students and adults
- Conduct outreach programs in Staten Island schools and shipyards
- Assist with mailings and outreach events that will help grow the Education Department
- Applicants must be able to travel to schools and shipyards in the museum’s service area
- This position involves lifting/carrying up to 20-pounds
- Reports to Director of Programs
- Applicants must be available weekdays during school hours as well as occasional events at the museum on evenings and weekends
- Excellent communication and classroom management skills
- Candidates must be fluent in English and possess proficiency in spoken and written Spanish
- Willingness to travel to off-site schools in the New York City area and transport lesson materials such as books and art supplies
- Dependable, adaptable, and comfortable working in all classroom settings including general education, special education, and ELL
- Capable of teaching history and art based lessons with occasional utilization of visual and/or performing arts skills such as dramatization, and/or music
- A bachelor’s degree in education, arts education, fine art, museum studies, art history, or other related field plus three to five years of teaching experience with general and special education students is a must
