ABOUTTHE SCHOOLS:
P.S. 173 Middle School serves recent arrivals from Spanish-speaking countries. The program is focused on leadership, STEM and academics with students in the sixth to eighth grade. Students engage in beat building, sports, theater, Lit Mentors, art and cooking.
School in the Square Middle serves the Washington Heights and Inwood communities where they support their students, families, and educators to support and celebrate each other's success. They specialize in personalized learning, real world lessons, democratic living, and setting students up for success through strategic advisory, academic perseverance, SEL Learning, college prep, and many other community-unique support systems.
P.S. 187 Hudson Cliffs services grades K-8th Grade. Opened since 1929, P.S. 187 “Strives to nurture diverse learners who challenge themselves academically, think critically, and actively participate in their community”.
Columbia Secondary School is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) focused public school that serves students in the sixth through tenth grades. The program is focused on leadership, STEM, Social-Emotional Learning, community service, and academics. Students engage in weekly hikes, gardening initiatives, STEM activities, job shadowing, and college readiness programs.
POSITION OVERVIEW:Group Leaders are responsible for academic tutoring and assisting lead instructors in preparing students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in STEM, leadership, sports and the arts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students.
- Organize, lead, and promote the students’ interest and participation in the activities offered by you or the program.
- Supervise groups of students while maintaining their physical and emotional safety and health.
- Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning, and serve as a role model to students.
- Always conducting yourself professionally and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
- Maintain effective classroom management that encourages full participation and student growth.
- Closely coordinate with the Program Director and coworkers for any programmatic changes or any other issues or concerns.
- Participate in staff meetings, program evaluations, program improvement, and professional development training throughout the school year.
- Work paid at $18 an hour.
- Employees who are approved and assigned to teach classes will receive the Teaching Artist hourly rate of $21 an hour for the hours they are actively teaching. All non-instructional hours will be compensated at the employee's regular position rate of $18 an hour.
- Part-time position.
- Available Monday-Friday from 1:30 pm - 6pm (15-20 hours per week) with room for flexibility.
- School in the Square is Monday-Friday from 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm (15-20 hours per week) with room for flexibility.
- Work is performed in a typical school environment.
- Genuine interest in working with culturally diverse 6th-8th Grade students, and able to promote positive character development.
- Strong academic skills and knowledge of New York state standards and test preparation.
- A sincere desire to effect positive social and academic change in the lives of NYC youth.
- Well-organized, reliable, and punctual.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Comfortable to learn and model universal Jewish values while working in and with a large, diverse population.
