Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

Apex serves approximately 2,700 youth annually from elementary through young adulthood. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position involves dual reporting to both the Queens Elementary Program Manager and the Queens Athletics Manager.

Apex’s Elementary Program Team addresses the educational, social, and emotional needs of elementary students through out-of-school enrichment programs, family nights, and community events. Sessions take place on Saturdays from October
- May. These programs follow a group-mentoring model, and are run by staff with support from volunteers who act as mentors to our youth.

Apex’s Athletics Programs addresses the physical and social-emotional needs of elementary and middle school students through athletics programs and various events throughout the year. Sessions take place on Saturday’s from October
- May in the afternoon after the morning Elementary Program. Our programs are run by staff with support from volunteers who act as dedicated coaches to our youth.

The Queens Program Coordinator will support both our Saturday Elementary Explorers and Athletics Programs (3rd-5th grade), held at Apex’s Flushing site, in addition to all other programming that serves students and families enrolled in the Elementary + Athletics programs. This position will report to both the Queens Elementary Program Manager and the Queens Athletics Program Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Management (55%)

  • Facilitate and support Saturday in-person sessions for all participants (students, volunteers, community partners on occasion) and establish a positive culture of belonging in your respective classroom;
  • Assist with Saturday session curriculum planning and lesson plan writing for school-year elementary and athletics programming;
  • Support with on-site logistics including materials preparation, student and volunteer arrival, attendance, and dismissal;
  • Support student and family communication for session and events;
  • Support the planning and implementation of school break programming (mid-winter, spring, and summer, as applicable);
  • Support the Program Managers to achieve program benchmarks around student and volunteer enrollment and attendance;
  • Support the collection and documentation of student and volunteer data in Salesforce and other platforms (attendance, surveys, communications);
  • Proactively share programmatic feedback and contribute to ideas for program roadmap;
  • Collaborate with other Elementary and Athletics Program Coordinators to lead the volunteer intake and placement process for all Elementary Enrichment programs;
  • Support program managers with volunteer recruitment events, orientations, and trainings;

Partnerships & Events (10%)

  • Support strong, collaborative relationships with partner schools and organizations;
  • Assist with the planning for and occasionally run Elementary community events, including Family Nights and field trips;
  • Collaborate with other Apex departments to provide comprehensive support to youth;

Other Duties (5%)

  • Support the tracking and maintenance of team tools, including the calendar and budget;
  • Oversee the roles and responsibilities of an intern, as necessary;
  • Attend all program and leadership meetings, as necessary;
  • Perform other duties as required;

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA or BS preferred
  • 1-3 years experience working with youth preferred;
  • Highly organized with strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong ability and interest in building community and genuine relationships;
  • Proactive nature and self-starter, ability to problem-solve autonomously;
  • Enjoys working closely with a team, as well as independently;
  • Ability to work on Saturdays, and take Sunday-Monday as the weekend;
  • Spoken fluency in Mandarin is preferred but not required
