Who We Are

Since its founding in 2010, Challenge Preparatory Charter School (Challenge Prep) has provided students and families with a successful academic program in Far Rockaway, Queens. We currently serve over 1,200 scholars from Kindergarten to 12th grade across 3 sites. Our school’s mission is to prepare students from the greater Far Rockaway community to excel academically, demonstrate mastery of the NY State Learning Standards, and achieve their career aspirations.

Challenge cultivates and supports the intellectual, aesthetic, social, emotional, and ethical development of its students and prepares them to be responsible 21st‑century citizens.

The ENL Teacher and Coordinator will be responsible for consistently collaborating with classroom teachers, special education support staff, administration, and families to ensure students are developing their language skills. The ENL Teacher prepares course materials, designs lessons that cover all aspects of the English language, keeps track of student progress, and customizes individualized plans for students with special requirements. Depending on grade level and student needs, the ENL Teacher implements effective strategies to support classrooms as an extra layer of instructional support or pulls students out to work on more targeted goals.

This position includes frequent meetings with direct supervisors/administration to discuss student progress and reflect on pedagogical goals.

• Consistently collaborates with classroom teachers, special education support staff, administration, and families to ensure students develop language skills.
• Prepares course materials and designs lessons covering all aspects of the English language, both written and verbal.
• Tracks student progress and customizes individualized plans for students with special requirements.
• Implements support in classrooms as an extra layer of instructional support or pulls students out for targeted goals.
• Frequent meetings with direct supervisors/administration to discuss student progress and reflect on pedagogical goals.
• Collaborates with colleagues to write unit plans and interim assessments, shares teaching strategies, visits peer classrooms, analyzes student data, and develops best‑practice pedagogy that supports literacy and critical thinking across all subject areas.
• Believes that all students can succeed with ample social‑emotional support in and out of the classroom.
• Employs a variety of collaborative team‑teaching models for ELL students and special needs students.
• Provides English‑Spanish translations for ELL students.
• Applies data gathered through formative and summative assessments to guide the instructional plan.
• Develops an individual growth plan, which includes professional goals and objectives in collaboration with the Principal and/or Assistant Principal.
• Utilizes technology, including a parent/student portal and school website that provides regular written updates and/or grades.

• Ability and willingness to incorporate reading and writing into specific content areas and develop unit plans that prioritize skill development and assessments that measure student progress.
• Willingness to integrate technology and/or media in the classroom.
• Ability and willingness to develop interim assessments, analyze student data, adjust teaching practices, and use ongoing data to drive instruction and increase student academic and social achievement.
• Evidence of commitment to continuous professional growth.
• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with colleagues, parents, students, industry partners, and the community.
• Bachelor’s degree required;
  Master’s degree and certification in an appropriate content area preferred.
• Dual or multiple licensing preferred; content area and ESL or Special Education.
• Highly motivated to teach students from underserved areas and devoted to closing the achievement gap.
• Teaching experience in an urban school setting preferred.
• Strong teamwork ethic.
• Ability to use data to drive instruction.
