Job Summary:

The Career Counselor is a key player in implementing a comprehensive suite of career readiness programs, tools, resources, and services for Mercy College. The Career Counselor offers career coaching to students, hosts and supports programming, conducts proactive outreach to students, and offers career support through classroom visits. In addition, the Career Counselor supports one or two major projects for the team;

major projects in Career & Professional Development include career in curriculum, data management, technology systems, and marketing.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Collaborate with the Career & Professional Development team in designing and executing undergraduate career programming, including Career Fairs and Networking events, resume building, Linked In, interview skills, job/internship search strategies, professional etiquette and other programs and services consistent with advancing undergraduate student career readiness and career management skills.
  • Once trained, coach Mercy students in one-on-one sessions.
  • Teach career readiness skills via classroom visits and group presentations.
  • Support EPIC career in curriculum program as needed (resume review, class visits, etc.).
  • Write and send targeted newsletters/blogs/other communication to students based on major and career interests.
  • Collaborate with Employer Relations to understand hiring trends, learn about employer partners, and include relevant employer content in student outreach.
  • Develop knowledge of Mercy majors and related career paths; build relationships with faculty and staff to ensure major and industry-specific opportunities and relevant resources are available to students.
  • Provide support one or two major projects for the department, depending on need: career in curriculum, data management, marketing, or systems.
  • Enter data and run reports as needed from various systems including Handshake, Excel, Banner, etc.
  • Provide some administrative support for the department as needed.
  • Document constituent interactions in a data rich environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Strong interest in Career Development and a desire to work and advance in this field.
  • Positive, welcoming, and inclusive attitude and excellent customer service focus.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication, problem solving, organizational and presentation skills.
  • Highly organized and motivated self-starter, able to work independently.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Zoom. Experience with higher education career technologies such as Banner, Handshake, uConnect, Big Interview, or Focus 2 a strong plus.
  • Highly tech savvy with strong ability to pick up new technology systems.
