Location: New York

New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites applications for a non-tenure track visiting position in Art Therapy, Visiting Assistant Professor in Art Therapy. The position will begin September 1, 2026. The appointed faculty member will be a member of the Department of Art and Art Professions. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal.

Located in New York's historic East Village, the NYU Art Therapy Program integrates psychotherapy and visual arts practice, engaging in the creative power of art for clinical assessment and treatment. In particular, we promote, a) scholarly research abilities and evidence-based clinical praxis, b) cross cultural competency with focusing on social justice issues, and c) fluency with the evolving technologies of new media art.

We seek applicants who will coordinate student fieldwork and internship placements, including site visits, liaising with clinical supervisors at partner institutions, and ensuring compliance with programming and accreditation standards. The Visiting Assistant Professor will also provide ongoing supervision to fieldwork students and maintain regular communication with internship site supervisors.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher, advisor, and mentor to graduate students. Visiting Faculty also often engage in scholarly work or creative production. Responsibilities include teaching graduate-level courses in art therapy; serving as the Internship and Fieldwork Coordinator; providing service in the administration of the program, and maintaining NYU's exemplary program of clinical practice, scholarship, and research.

Qualifications
  • a) an ATR-BC; a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Art Therapy; a current New York State Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) license or eligibility for NYS LCAT licensure,
  • b) strong communication skills as a classroom teacher and demonstrated abilities as a teacher,
  • c) minimum of 5 years of clinical experience which must include supervision, and knowledge of evidence based practice,
  • d) Some administrative knowledge and the ability to handle admissions and internship coordination.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $74,000 - $114,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
