Program Overview:

The Henry Street Settlement Community School program at Orchard Collegiate Academy delivers multi-tiered, holistic support to students, faculty, families, and the broader school community. Rooted in a strengths-based, compassionate, and solution-focused approach, the program provides high-quality socio-emotional care aimed at fostering academic achievement, attendance/engagement support and graduation. Integrated support is reinforced through additional Henry Street Settlement (HSS) departments and an on-site mental health team.

College + Postsecondary Services:

The College + Postsecondary Office delivers comprehensive academic, college access, and youth development services to prepare students for success beyond high school. In collaboration with school staff, families, and community partners, the office delivers college readiness initiatives, enrichment programs, leadership development, and supportive care designed to expand higher education access and empower students to reach their personal and academic potential.

Job Summary:

The College + Postsecondary Counselor guides 9th-12th grade students in exploring, planning, and executing personalized postsecondary goals, whether pursuing 2- or 4-year colleges, vocational/trade programs, apprenticeship opportunities, or direct entry into the workforce. This role provides individual, group advising, facilitates college and career readiness workshops, and assists with financial aid, application processes, scholarship applications etc. Collaborating closely with families, school faculty, and community organizations, the Counselor works to break down barriers to postsecondary access and ensure every student graduates with a clear, actionable plan for their future.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in education, Social Work, or Guidance Counseling, or related field required. Master's preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with young adults
  • Ability to relate to and interact with high school and alumni participants from diverse backgrounds
  • Thorough knowledge of all steps in various applications, including but not limited to: CUNY, SUNY, College Now, private colleges, vocational, college/university application, financial aid, scholarships etc.
  • Strong organizational, multitasking and follow through skills used to maintain and update student tracking systems
  • Self-motivated with the ability to be resourceful, work efficiently, be flexible, and bring positive team-oriented attitude
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills used to build relationships with students and families
  • Computer knowledge including experience with Overgard, Microsoft and Google Classroom

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide group and individual college counseling to high school students
  • Prepare and facilitate college and postsecondary workshops to build student knowledge and prepare for postsecondary process, including by integrating college and career counseling into existing academic and Advisory classes.
  • Serve as member of College and Career Access Team, responsible for executing annual school-wide programs that celebrate student progress and achievement (i.e., Decision Day, Career Day).
  • Spearhead postsecondary scholarship nominations, monitor applications and support students throughout process
