General Description

SUNY Niagara has a need for a part time Music Instructor for our American Popular Music course. This course is taught in person in a classroom setting on our Sanborn, NY campus. It is a survey of American popular music from its roots to the present day, tracing the acculturation process to the creation of Jazz and Rock n’ Roll and present day popular music forms.

It investigates American music in cultural, social, structural and artistic contexts. No necessity to read music notation. The course is required for music majors and recommended for non-music majors or students without previous music experience.

In order to build and maintain a qualified candidate pool, applications are accepted on a continuous basis. Applications are evaluated as needed and candidates will be notified if an opening exists.

Typical Work Activities
  • Teach course on campus.
  • Track attendance.
  • Report on student learning outcomes at the end of the semester.
  • Report grades at the conclusion of the semester.
Essential Functions

Ability to work with, and teach a diverse student population; speak in front of groups; effectively communicate with students, co‑workers, supervisors and the campus community; develop, prepare and present information; operate computers; physically perform duties and adjust teaching per ADA provisions.

Required Qualifications
  • Three years of experience teaching at a high school or college level.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Music or related field.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word).
  • Experience with the Brightspace learning management system.
