School Programs Educator

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) seeks experienced museum educators to join our team of Artist Educators working with school programs. MAD Artist Educators work with K-12 school audiences and develop and lead student-centered, inquiry-based gallery tours and hands-on art activities for on-site MADLab field trips. The ideal candidate possesses a strong gallery teaching skillset, experience working with youth audiences in either a museum or art education setting, and familiarity with the visual arts.

Candidates should be reflective practitioners committed to fostering inclusive museum experiences that empower students to be creative and critical thinkers. Highly desired are educators with fluency in Spanish or Mandarin, or who have experience working with students with disabilities (such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, cognitive delays, emotional disabilities, sensory impairments, or multiple disabilities).

This position reports to the Deputy Director of Education and Senior Manager of School and Teacher Programs.

Teaching assignments are determined on a monthly basis, and educators are expected to be available for at least 6 on-site MADLab field trips each month during the NYC Public Schools academic year. MADLab field trips primarily take place Tuesday through Fridays in the mornings and early afternoons.

Pending demand for programs and individual availability, educators may earn up to $8,000 per school year ($150 per onsite MADLab, $220 for bilingual onsite MADLabs, $35 per hour for meetings and lesson plans). Educators may have additional opportunities to facilitate or assist with adult workshops and weekend children's programs.

This position is classified as seasonal. Employees are hired part-time with the option for yearly contract renewal pending a review process. Seasonal employees are not eligible for any Museum of Arts and Design-sponsored benefits, other than those benefits required by law, such as New York City mandated sick leave.

• Develop and lead thematic, developmentally appropriate, inquiry-based gallery tours and artmaking lessons for K-12 audiences based on MAD’s current exhibitions and collection
• Write lesson plans for gallery tours and artmaking lessons that are tailored to program theme, current exhibitions, grade level, and the group’s learning objectives
• Conduct independent research on exhibition and collection artists and review all required resource materials for each new exhibition
• Incorporate NYC Department of Education “Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Visual Arts” within school program curriculum
• Attend all (paid) meetings and training sessions, and evaluations
• Prepare gallery tour materials, set up classroom and art supplies before onsite programs, clean up and return supplies after each program, and help maintain cleanliness of shared classroom space
• Prioritize diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in all aspects of the role

• Strong foundation of best practices for gallery teaching, especially guided inquiry and multimodal engagement
• Ability to commit to at least 6 MADLab programs per month during the NYC Public Schools academic year
• Interest in and knowledge of contemporary art, craft, and design practices
• Familiarity with NYC Department of Education “Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Visual Arts”
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work collaboratively and co-teach with other Artist Educators and Education Department staff
• Ability to receive and implement feedback
• Must reliably respond to email and phone communication with MAD staff and program stakeholders in a timely manner
• Ability to adhere to schedules, deadlines, and administrative guidelines for all programs

• Minimum two years gallery teaching experience
• Experience creating and implementing object-based lessons and art making programs for school-age audiences (K-12) in a museum or art education setting

• Fluency in Spanish or Mandarin highly desired
• Experience working with students with disabilities (such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, cognitive delays, emotional disabilities, sensory impairments, or multiple disabilities).
