Ace Advisor

The ACE Advisor will provide individualized academic and personal support to a cohort of students enrolled in the ACE program at SUNY Old Westbury. The Advisor plays an essential role in guiding students through their academic journey, inclusive of degree requirements, course planning and graduation processes, and promoting student engagement and academic success. This position helps student navigate challenges and connecting them with resources to ensure timely graduation.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Offer personalized guidance on course selection, academic planning, and progression to ensure students meet their educational goals.
  • Assist students in overcoming personal, financial, and academic obstacles by connecting them with appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops on topics such as study skills, time management, career exploration, and financial literacy.
  • Track student performance, maintain detailed records, and implement interventions as needed to promote student success.
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to coordinate support services and advocate for student needs.
  • Participate in the recruitment of new students and assist in orientation sessions to acclimate them to the program.
  • Stay informed about best practices in academic advising and student support through ongoing professional development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of:
    Proficiency in data analysis and familiarity with student information and student success software products. Knowledge of student development practices and counseling skills. Good knowledge and proficiency in academic advising and student development and support strategies. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. Commitment to the success of the students and the University and meeting and sustaining matriculation goals.
  • Skill in:
    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Organizational skills. Cultural competence and ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies. Skilled in engaging differing populations through effective verbal and written communication across internal and external groups. Strong customer service skills and listening skills.
  • Ability to:
    Build and maintain collaborative working relationships. Interpret and communicate academic information across a wide range of majors and disciplines to students. Maintain accurate and concise information in systems. Work independently and as part of a team. Support a diverse student population and enhance student success.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (master's preferred) in counseling, education, social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services within a multicultural diverse education setting.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of other higher student systems, i.e., Banner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or Counselor Education or related program.
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in academic advising or counseling in a multicultural diverse higher education setting.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and knowledge of other higher student systems, i.e., Banner.
