Position Summary:
The Special Education Community Support Coordinator will work closely with the senior leadership from the Office of First Deputy Chancellor (OFDC), senior leadership from the Division of Inclusive and Accessible Learning (DIAL) and District 75, Committee on Special Education (CSE) Chairs, and Superintendents, to ensure that the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS)’s vision for students with disabilities is shared and reflected in the practices of all members of the OFDC and the schools they serve.
Under the Director for Special Education, with wide latitude to exercise independent judgment and initiative, the Special Education Community Support Coordinator will support the implementation of the Chancellor’s vision for special education by educating families about special education in our schools and the improvements for their children, as well as surface systemic issues related to special education raised by families and plans for short and long term resolution.

Key Relationships:Works closely with members of the OFDC Special Education team to disseminate information regarding the Special Education process, provide parent trainings, and ensure that all student cases are resolved in a timely manner. Will also work with DIAL on issues related to OFDC. In addition, will work collaboratively with Special Education Resolution Coordinators in other OFDC offices and with the superintendents’ teams to ensure that messaging is consistent across the city.
Responsibilities- Provides support, professional development, and resources to president’s councils, community and Citywide Education Councils (CECs), District Leadership Teams (DLTs), OFDC Family Leadership Coordinators (FLCs).
- Develops workshops for parent leaders, district, and school staff.
- Creates a borough specific toolkit of local resources and supports for parents of students with disabilities to be shared with OFDC, Family Support Coordinators (FSCs), parent coordinators and parent leaders.
- Acts as a trusted intermediary between NYCPS and families, providing assistance to support families and helping to resolve conflicts.
- Develops and maintains a public email inbox for families and external partners.
- Oversees concerns raised by the community on behalf of students with disabilities.
- Partners with superintendents, OFDC, FSCs, supervisors of psychologists, school leaders, and school based CSEs to address concerns raised by the families of students with disabilities.
- Directs field staff in supporting programmatic and educational resolution on behalf of students.
- Utilizes school systems, such as SESIS, ATS, and SIS, to serve as a source of information and support and act as a conduit between conflicting parties.
- Thoroughly investigates and resolves complaints, educating constituents on their rights, and sharing results with the Director for Special Education, OFDC and the Special Education Office, to ensure that systemic needs are flagged for resolution.
- Provides a weekly data report on resolutions for families of students with disabilities to both Central and the Family Support and Operations Manager, highlighting figures and trends.
- Supports schools in effectively engaging parents of students with disabilities.
- Uses independent judgment to resolve issues raised on behalf of students with disabilities.
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
- High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.
In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of relevant work experience.
