JOB SUMMARY

The New York Historical is seeking part-time Educators to lead history programs for students ages Pre‑K through College in the museum galleries, including the permanent collections, special exhibitions, and the DiMenna Children’s History Museum. The collections of the New York Historical support programming that covers 400 years of New York and American history.

Drawing on said world‑renowned collections and a staff of passionate professionals, the NYH Education Department engages learners of all ages and abilities in the study of our collective past to deepen content knowledge, develop 21st‑century skills, and foster an empowered and engaged citizenry. We believe in the power of authentic historical study to spark curiosity and creativity, to promote cultural understanding, and to strengthen our democracy.

Under the supervision of the Manager of School Programs, Educators facilitate object‑based, inquiry‑driven tours and workshops in the museum galleries and classrooms, as well as online in which material culture provides a window into the past.
Educators must be available to work between the hours of 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM at least three business days a week for the majority of the school year.

The New York Historical provides extensive, rigorous training upon hiring and throughout the school year, developing Educators’ museum and history education practice, historical content knowledge, and class management skills. Therefore,
candidates must be available for onboarding days October 6th‑8th, 10 AM‑5 PM to be considered for the position.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Educators will teach inquiry‑based programming about important events and periods in New York and American history in The New York Historical galleries, special exhibitions, and online learning platforms.
  • Educators are expected to learn all programs by studying the provided program outlines and conducting additional research to ensure the effective delivery of content.
  • Educators will communicate with New York Historical administrative staff to ensure all programs are delivered in a timely fashion and meet expectations.
  • Educators will maintain accurate records of program delivery within personal calendars and the Education Division booking system.
  • Prior to teaching, Educators will gather materials to conduct successful programs.
  • Educators are required to attend regularly‑scheduled Education Division trainings to learn institutional pedagogy and content.
  • Educators must complete and submit all required paperwork including program evaluations, planning session sheets, and time‑sheets within the given deadlines.
  • Additional opportunities may be available to lead parent involvement programs, family programs, special events, teacher workshops, etc.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree. Concentration in History, American Studies, Education, and/or Art History preferred.
  • Candidates must have worked in a museum, educational setting, or youth program, with experience in classroom management and establishing a strong rapport with groups of students.
