Quiz Team Advisor

Overview:
The Quiz Team Advisor leads the Cooperstown High School Quiz Team, a group dedicated to academic excellence and competitive knowledge. The adviser organizes weekly meetings and coordinates the team's participation in a variety of regional and national academic tournaments. This role involves mentoring students in preparation for competitions, fostering intellectual curiosity, and building a collaborative, academically focused team environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Organize and lead weekly Quiz Team meetings, typically held Monday mornings before school.
- Develop and implement a variety of quiz formats and training exercises to engage team members.
- Encourage participation from students in grades 9–12 and coordinate monthly invitations for students in grades 7–8 to join.
- Register, prepare for, and oversee student participation in academic tournaments, including:
- Double Down Tournament
- Upstate Academic Challenge Tournaments
- Fall Brainbusters Tournament
- TC3's High School Challenge National Tournament (if qualified)
- Community Quiz Bowl Tournament
- Additional tournaments as opportunities arise
- Promote a culture of academic enthusiasm, curiosity, and teamwork.
- Foster student development in interdisciplinary knowledge and critical thinking.
Mission Statement:
To prepare for and compete in academic contests, to develop interest in academic areas beyond the course schedule, and to build knowledge networks between disparate academic areas.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Quiz Bowl or Academic Competition
Experience:
Prior experience as a quiz team participant, coach, or advisor. - Familiarity with national and regional academic tournaments and their formats.
- Academic Breadth:
Well-rounded knowledge across multiple disciplines (history, literature, science, math, pop culture, etc.). - Ability to help students make interdisciplinary connections.
- Event Planning
Experience:
Comfort with coordinating team travel and managing competition-day logistics. - Experience promoting school activities or recruiting student participation.
- Technology Proficiency:
Competence in using buzzer systems, quiz software, or managing digital team communications (e.g., Google Classroom, email, etc.). - Personal Traits:
Passion for learning and academic excellence. Enthusiastic, energetic, and encouraging. Strong advocate for student engagement beyond the classroom. Organized, reliable, and proactive.
