The Woodbury Public Library is seeking a creative, nurturing, and enthusiastic Children’s Library Assistant to support library services and programming for children in grades K–5. The successful candidate will help continue the Library’s tradition of excellent children’s programming while providing outstanding customer service and fostering meaningful connections with children, families, schools, and the broader community. 29 hours/week; evening and weekend availability required.
This position offers an opportunity to contribute to engaging programs, outreach initiatives, collection development, and welcoming library spaces for children and families.
Key Responsibilities- Provide friendly, responsive, and excellent customer service to children and families.
- Assist with planning, promoting, and leading children’s programs and special events.
- Support Summer Reading and other high-volume library programs and activities.
- Assist with circulation and help maintain welcoming, organized, and engaging children’s spaces.
- Prepare monthly written and statistical reports.
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Create engaging and age-appropriate book displays and other promotional materials.
- Develop and provide community outreach services, with an emphasis on strengthening the Library’s connections with local schools and community organizations.
- Work collaboratively with library staff while also demonstrating initiative and the ability to work independently.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum of one year of experience working with children.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfort using technology and managing multiple responsibilities in a busy public-service environment.
- Must qualify for appointment as an Orange County Civil Service Library Assistant (Children’s Services).
Preferred:
- Experience planning and presenting programs for children.
- Knowledge and understanding of children’s developmental stages and needs.
- Basic knowledge of public library operations, activities, principles, and procedures.

Initial placement is for 90 days. Continued employment beyond 90 days is contingent upon the applicant being certified as eligible by the Orange County Department of Human Resources through its continuous recruitment process.
