Position Summary

The Children's Aid's Adult Education Program at the Salome Urena Campus offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESOL) Levels I - III and social‑emotional learning (SEL). The program runs in two cycles—September to January and February to the end of May. Classes meet twice a week from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The ESOL Instructor is responsible for delivering high‑quality English language instruction to non‑native English speakers, with a focus on fostering language development, academic progress, and cultural integration.

The instructor designs and implements engaging lessons aligned with New York State standards and students’ language proficiency levels, using a variety of teaching methods to support diverse learning styles.

Essential Duties
  • Understand and promote the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values and ensure alignment with policies and procedures.
  • Establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Assess student English proficiency using the BEST PLUS 2.0.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for activities.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that gives students opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures to maintain order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Conduct three assessments per student—pre‑assignment, mid‑assessment, and post‑assessment—to ensure students meet program indicators.
  • Observe and evaluate students’ work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs, abilities, and interests.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by Children’s Aid Society policies.
  • Provide rigorous instruction to ESOL students that supports the acceleration of English language proficiency aligned with New York State standards.
  • Prepare students for further education by encouraging exploration of learning opportunities and perseverance with challenging tasks.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, their families, and the school, especially concerning cultural and language differences, and provide cross‑cultural information to foster positive relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related subject.
  • At least two years of teaching experience is highly preferred.
