ABOUT JOHN JAY’S SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENTThe Sociology Department at John Jay has 24 full-time faculty members. Our faculty are scholar-educators who conduct research and teach on a broad range of topics and subfields in the disciplines of sociology and criminology. The department offers majors and minors in both Sociology and Criminology as well as a certificate and minor in Dispute Resolution. We serve over 2,000 students across our majors.
The teaching load at John Jay is 3-3.

Ph.D. degree in Sociology, Criminology, or a related area. ABD applicants will be considered but their degree must be completed by May 31, 2027. Also required are scholarly productivity while teaching successfully, a willingness to participate in departmental and college service, and the ability to work with others for the good of our institution and academic community. Candidates who have experience teaching Hispanic and minority students will be strongly considered.
