FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION

OVERVIEW

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at John Jay College-CUNY seeks applications from individuals with experience teaching Spanish English Translation & Interpreting for a full-time Lecturer position to begin Fall 2027. The position of Lecturer is tenure-bearing through a Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE) following the sixth annual reappointment. Lecturers become eligible for promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer after eight years of full-time continuous service, and for the rank of Doctoral Lecturer upon completion of a Ph.D.

The appointed faculty member will perform teaching and related faculty functions in areas of expertise, share responsibility for departmental and College committee work and other duties as assigned by the chair. Teaching duties include a 4/4 load (eight undergraduate courses per year). Service duties include actively recruiting, advising and mentoring Spanish majors, minors, and Certificate students, among others. Responsibilities will include working collaboratively with colleagues, the department, and the College.

The hiring committee is especially interested in applicants who contribute to the goals of the college through their leadership, community service, and or lived experiences.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers a BA in Spanish with concentrations in Spanish English Legal Translation/Interpretation, and Spanish and Latin American Literatures and Cultures; a Spanish minor; and three Certificates in Legal Translation and/or Interpretation. It also offers L2 courses in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Portuguese. For Spanish, both L2 and Heritage tracks are offered

QUALIFICATIONS

By the date of appointment, applicants must possess a Master's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent non-U.S. institution in one of the following: (1) Translation and/or Interpreting Studies; (2) a related discipline with a demonstrable academic focus in translation and/or interpreting; or (3) another discipline together with demonstrable professional experience in translation and/or interpreting.
