Associate Provost, Academic And Faculty Excellence
Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President and working in partnership with senior university leaders, deans, department chairs, and the Faculty Senate, the Associate Provost, Academic and Faculty Excellence provides leadership for academic quality, curriculum, and academic policy. The Associate Provost also provides leadership for the Center for Faculty Excellence, designing programming that advances instructional quality, curricular innovation, scholarly productivity, and inclusive pedagogy for full-time and adjunct faculty.
The incumbent also serves as Acting Provost in times of need.
Responsibilities include:
Academic Excellence:
- Serve as a resource to deans and department chairs on the interpretation and application of faculty policy;
- Manage faculty workload policy, course releases, and overload processes in partnership with deans and the Office of the Provost;
- Administer faculty awards, recognition programs, and internal grant competitions, convening and supporting independent selection committees;
- Serve as a point of contact for faculty questions about academic policy and process, directing grievances, appeals, and complaints arising from personnel decisions to Human Resources, the bargaining unit, or the designated appeal body;
- Chair the General Education and Curriculum Committees of the Academic Senate, as the Provost's designee;
- Liaise with the Libraries, Information Technology Systems, Student Engagement and Development, and other units on matters involving academic concerns;
- Represent the Office of the Provost on university committees, task forces, and governance bodies as assigned;
- Serve as Acting Provost as needed.
Faculty Excellence:
- Lead and set the strategic direction of the Center for Faculty Excellence, aligning its programming with the university's academic priorities and with documented faculty needs
- Lead, supervise, and develop Center staff
- Design and deliver a comprehensive program of faculty development — e.g., workshops, institutes, communities of practice, faculty development days, consultations, and course design support — for full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty across all schools and colleges
- Design and administer new faculty onboarding and multi-year orientation, and coordinate university-wide faculty mentoring efforts
- Provide confidential, formative consultation on teaching, including classroom observation, course design review, and midterm student feedback
- Advance evidence-based, inclusive, and learner-centered teaching practice, and support faculty engagement with emerging instructional technologies, including the responsible use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning
- Support faculty research and scholarly development, including writing programs, grant-seeking support, and the scholarship of teaching and learning
- Provide support for portfolio preparation to faculty approaching reappointment, promotion, or tenure through a combination of workshops, exemplar review, narrative development, and individual consultation on documenting teaching, scholarship, and service
- Partner with the Libraries, Information Technology Servies, Student Engagement and Development, and others to deliver coherent, non-duplicative support to faculty
- Establish and report on measures of the Center's reach, quality, and impact; use assessment findings to refine programming
- Manage the Center's budget and resources; pursue external funding where appropriate
- When available, represent the university in regional and national educational development networks and communities of practice
Qualifications include:
- Doctorate or terminal degree;
- A record of teaching, scholarship, and service sufficient to warrant appointment, with tenure, at the rank of associate professor or professor at New York Institute of Technology;
- Successful and demonstrated experience with faculty development (e.g., designing and delivering faculty development programming);
