Originally founded in Queens in the early 1960s, Commonpoint meets the evolving needs of 80,000 people through wide-ranging programs at over 75 locations, including flagship sites in Little Neck, Forest Hills, and Elmhurst.

Position Overview:

The Part-Time Assistant Teacher reports to the Director of the Early Childhood Center and supports the curriculum, classroom environment, and classroom management as determined by the Head Teacher and Director. Early Childhood Professionals support children ages 2-5 as part of a teaching team led by the Head Teacher; the classroom serves up to 18 children.

Schedule:

Maximum of 19 hours per week between 7:30 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. In-person, non-union position located at 67-09 108th Street, Forest Hills, NY 11375.

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with the Group Teacher to provide an age-appropriate, safe, healthy environment supporting social, intellectual, physical, and emotional development
• Support the Group Teacher in educating and supervising an assigned group of children at all times
• Help ensure parent involvement through regular, open communication, including parent meetings and events, newsletters, and conferences
• Help keep records on children and families current, complete, and confidential
• Maintain an open, frequent dialogue with the Group Teacher and Education Director
• Assist in maintaining a clean, safe facility for children and parents
• Participate in related training opportunities as they become available

Qualifications:

• Must be over age 18 with a High School diploma;
  Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred
• Minimum two years of experience in a classroom setting with preschool children (ages 2-5)
• Knowledge of child development including typical and atypical language, cognitive, motor, social, and self-help skills
• Experience working with groups and families from diverse cultural, linguistic, economic, and ethnic backgrounds
• New York State Certified Teacher's Assistant Credential desired; current CPR/First Aid certification preferred
• Able to bend to a child's level and lift 40 pounds
• Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Mandarin or Cantonese) a plus
