ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: KCS is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) multi-service organization founded in 1973 and supported by government agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals. Through programs in social services, education, culture, public health, and workforce development, KCS serves the Korean and greater community across New York and New Jersey.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The NJ Education Department is seeking a dynamic and talented part-time Adult Chorus Instructor to lead our adult choral program in Tenafly, NJ. The instructor will play a pivotal role in shaping the ensemble, fostering a lifelong love of music within our community, and enhancing our members’ vocal abilities and performance skills.
- Direct engaging, structured, and high-energy rehearsals for a diverse group of adult choral singers.
- Teach essential vocal techniques, including proper breath support, posture, tone production, diction, and vocal health to enhance overall ensemble sound.
- Select a diverse and engaging musical repertoire appropriate for adult learners of varying skill levels.
- Assess singer progress regularly and adapt instructional methods to accommodate different learning styles, musical backgrounds, and vocal ranges.
- Foster a supportive, welcoming, and inclusive classroom climate that encourages adult learners of all backgrounds and skill levels.
- Cultivate collaboration, mutual respect, and teamwork among choir members to build a cohesive, unified group dynamic and a strong sense of community.
- Oversee the efficient setup and breakdown of the rehearsal space, ensuring all equipment (sheet music, keyboards, chairs) is handled with care.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and communicate program updates or schedule changes to members effectively.
- Prepare the ensemble for community showcases, recitals, or seasonal performances when appropriate.
- Perform additional program-related duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.
- Education:
Associate’s degree in Music, Vocal Performance, Music Education, Choral Conducting, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Vocal Performance, or Choral Conducting preferred. - Teaching History: 1–2 years of instructional or conducting experience, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked with adult learners or community ensembles.
- Musical Proficiency:
Ability to accompany rehearsals on piano and/or keyboard is required to effectively support choral instruction and rehearsals. - Choral Leadership:
Proven ability to lead engaging, structured, and effective choral rehearsals that motivate singers of varying skill levels. - Vocal Pedagogy:
Strong understanding of vocal anatomy, healthy vocal production, and choral blending techniques. - Classroom Management:
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to maintain a safe, welcoming, and productive learning environment. - Language
Skills:
Full professional fluency in written and spoken English is required. Bilingual proficiency in Korean is highly preferred. - Location:
Must have reliable transportation and the ability to commute consistently to the program location in Tenafly, NJ.
