Riis Settlement seeks experienced, flexible and student-centered Substitute ESOL instructors to provide on-call coverage for our adult ESOL classes while the regular instructor is unavailable. Substitute instructors will step into existing classes and provide in-person instruction during the regularly scheduled class time. Assignments may range from a single class session to multiple days or weeks, depending on program needs and the anticipated return of the regular instructor.
Class schedules include morning (9:00 - 12:00 pm Tuesday to Thursday) or evening (6:00 - 9:00 pm Tuesday to Thursday) at three program sites in Long Island City, Astoria, and Jackson Heights, Queens. The Substitute ESOL Instructor will work within the Immigrant Services Program to provide adult English language learners with practical, contextualized instruction that strengthens the English language skills needed to participate more effectively in their communities, workplaces, and daily lives.
Successful candidates will have experience creating welcoming, student-centered learning environments; using communicative and interactive teaching approaches; and adapting instruction to meet the needs of learners at different proficiency levels.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide engaging, student-centered ESOL instruction for beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced adult learners.
- Follow lesson plans and instructional guidance provided by the regular instructor when available. Develop and adapt instructional activities when substitute materials are not available or when modifications are needed to meet student needs.
- Facilitate authentic language practice through interactive activities that support listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
- Use a communicative, contextualized approach that incorporates relevant topics such as daily life skills, job readiness, and civic engagement.
- Adapt instruction and classroom activities to accommodate diverse learning styles, English proficiency levels, and student needs.
- Maintain a welcoming, respectful, and supportive classroom environment that encourages student participation and learning.
- Review and prepare instructional materials prior to assigned classes.
- Take attendance and complete other required classroom documentation, as directed.
- Communicate with program staff regarding classroom activities, student concerns, and any information needed to support continuity when the regular instructor returns.
- Assist with student registration and pre- and post- testing activities as needed. Training will be provided for staff who are required to administer BEST Plus assessments.
- Participate in program orientations, meetings, and professional development activities as requested.
- Assist with student progress documentation as needed during longer-term substitute assignments, including student goal-setting, monthly progress notes, and outcome assessment.
- Bachelor's Degree and 2+ years relevant teaching experience (Master's in TESOL and/or Education preferred)
- Ability to modify/adapt existing lesson plans and curricula to fit program needs, and/or create original lesson plans
- Thorough, detailed knowledge and understanding of English grammar with the ability to clearly explain all verbs, tenses, and parts of speech.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with team.
- Advanced computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office. Ability to interact with diverse immigrant populations and empathize with people of different cultural backgrounds.
