About the Research Foundation for Farmingdale State College:
The Research Foundation for The State University of New York (RF) is the largest comprehensive university-connected research foundation in the country. It exists to serve the State University of New York (SUNY) by providing essential administrative services that enable SUNY faculty to focus their efforts on the education of students and the performance of life-changing research across a wide range of disciplines including medicine, engineering, physical sciences, energy, computer science, and social sciences.
The RF is a private non-profit education corporation that is tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section
501(c) (3).
The Research Foundation supports the advancement of education, research, and discovery at the State University of New York (SUNY) Established in 1951, the RF carries out its responsibilities pursuant to a formal contract with SUNY that has been in force since 1977.
Separate from SUNY, the RF is able to form partnerships that enhance SUNY's education, research, and public service mission, and spur economic development across New York State. The primary service offered by the RF is sponsored programs administration. The infrastructure in place for sponsored programs allows for RF to also administer agency funds and assist campuses with establishing affiliated corporations.
Job Description:STEP is a New York State Education Program that provides academic support services and enrichment activities to students in grade 7-12 who show interest and aptitude in STEM or licensed professions. STEP students acquire the skills necessary for successful entry into college and science, engineering, technology, health-related fields and licensed professions.
STEP offers academic programs, enrichment activities and support services aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies necessary for students in grades 7-12 for entry into college-level programs in Science, Engineering, Technology, Health Sciences and licensed professions.
The academic programs offered by STEP include lab-based instruction in such areas as Mathematics, Biosciences, Physical Sciences, Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Computer Programming and applications, Robotics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Technologies, Aviation Management Technology and written communication. The enrichment programs of STEP include college-level courses, in-school tutorials in mathematics and sciences, team work and leadership development opportunities as well as hands-on projects in science and engineering technologies.
The support services offered by STEP include academic counseling and advising, college entry test preparation, arrangements for summer internships, field trips to industry sites and academic institutions and opportunities for participation in regional conferences.
The STEP Tutor provides high-quality academic support to middle and high school students enrolled in the STEP Program at Farmingdale State College. Tutors deliver individualized and small-group instruction in Mathematics, English, and/or Science while fostering academic confidence, critical thinking, and effective study habits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in Mathematics, English, and/or Science.
- Assist students with homework, test preparation, and mastery of classroom concepts.
- Reinforce effective study skills, organization, and problem-solving strategies.
- Collaborate with STEP staff and instructors to support student success.
- Monitor student progress and communicate concerns or achievements to program staff.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Comply with all Farmingdale State College and STEP program policies and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of subject area at equivalent student level and setting.
- Ability to transfer knowledge and skill concepts to student learners.
- Experience working with students.
- Strong academic background in Mathematics, English, and/or Science.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to supporting diverse and underrepresented student populations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
ADDITIONAL
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Earned Bachelor's degree or degree in progress in a related field.
- Previous tutoring, teaching, or mentoring experience.
This is a part-time Research Foundation position.
