Position: Library Assistant — The East Fishkill Public Library
Location: Hopewell Junction

The East Fishkill Public Library has a full-time position open for Library Assistant
- Community Engagement and Adult Services.

The Library Assistant aids the Adult Librarian, Assistant Director, and Director in providing programs and services to the community. Attention to detail, the ability to multitask within multiple deadlines, and outstanding communication skills are key for this position. Computer skills and technology troubleshooting are essential to the position as is resourcefulness, adaptability, good judgement and the genuine passion for working with people.

This position reports directly to the Head Adult Services Librarian.

Community Engagement & Adult Services Library Assistant Duties:
  • Conducts programming
    - Adult and Community Programs- passive and direct including maintaining supplies, planning, budgeting, and room set up
  • Provides one-on-one technology assistance to patrons (Digital Navigator Certification)
  • Responsible for all media for programming- creation and scheduling of flyers, social media posts, calendar entries, website postings etc.
  • Reference desk assistance
    - Helping patrons with reference questions, locating materials, computer/printing/copier assistance, monitoring patron behavior, and front desk overflow. This position spends almost all work hours on the public floor
  • Plans and coordinates exhibits for the gallery wall and showcase with outside community groups
  • Maintains bulletin boards daily
  • Compiles and creates booklists, read alike lists, and creates library displays as assigned
  • Participates in continuing education as assigned
  • Does related work as required
Programs and services this position is responsible for include:
  • Annual tax forms
  • Annual Shred event
  • The Great Give Back
  • All fiber arts groups (Knit N’ Knosh, Community Stitchers, Crochet Class)
  • All game-based programming (Chess Club, Game & Puzzle Swap, etc.)
  • Services based programs (Medicare 101, Job Search 101, etc.)
  • Technology education classes (creating a library curriculum of classes, planning and conducting classes)
  • Annual East Fishkill Community Day
  • Additional programs and services monthly based on community needs and interests
Position hours:

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 12:00pm to 8:00pm
Monday, Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm
Saturday rotation (hours of 9:00am to 5:00pm, 3rd Saturday of the month, and additional 2-3 Saturday events per year)

Civil Service

Minimum Requirements:

“EITHER: (A) Bachelor’s degree;
OR: (B) Associate’s degree and two (2) years of paid work experience in the provision of non-clerical library activities which do not require the possession of a Master’s degree in library science (i.e., the conduct of a specific library program including video or craft programs; the selection and processing of literature; or the preparation of library artwork and decoration);
OR: (C) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of paid work experience in the provision of non-clerical library activities which do not require the possession of a Master’s degree in library science (i.e., the conduct of a specific library program including video or craft programs; the selection and processing of literature;

or the preparation of library artwork and decoration);
OR: (D) An equivalent combination of education, training and experience between the limits of (A) and (C) above.”
This is a civil service position, and candidates must meet the minimum requirements for placement. This position is part of the NYS HELPS program. No exam is required.

Compensation:

The salary for this position is $46,000 annually, paid biweekly. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance with the library paying 80% of premium, health and dependent care flexible spending accounts, TIAA 403(b) retirement with the library matching up to 8%, employee assistance program, paid time off (vacation, sick, personal), holiday pay, bereavement pay, and pay for unscheduled closings.
