The Lead Academic and Professional Advisor plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. This position is a professional leader with expertise in advising undergraduate students who are exploring major options or have already declared a major. The advisor collaborates with the advising team, faculty, and departments to provide outstanding service to students, supporting their academic and professional goals and timely completion of degrees.

This role carries a full advising caseload. Primary responsibilities include academic advising, career/professional, and post‑graduation planning. The Lead Advisor designs, develops, updates, and delivers workshops for undergraduate students on topics related to major and/or minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning. The Advisor works directly with the Assistant Director to advance projects toward the office’s strategic goals.

Bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred. 3+ years experience in academic advising at the college-level is required.

• Maintain current knowledge of academic advising and career counseling functions.
• Expert level knowledge of academic counseling methods and career modeling, and ability to interpret and communicate assessment results.
• Experience in career exploration and counseling as part of academic advising.
• Excellent interpersonal, planning, teamwork, and organizational skills.
• Ability to independently interpret and recommend improvements in advising policy and procedure.

• Provide academic and professional advising through one‑on‑one and group sessions for a cohort of undergraduate students.
• Manage own caseload to ensure all students meet on‑time graduation requirements.
• Support degree audits, maintain accurate student records in the university’s software.
• Design, develop, update, and deliver a variety of career and academic workshops on major/minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning.
• Plan and facilitate group advising events and collaborate on campus initiatives for Arts and Sciences/Maxwell students.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff across schools and colleges to guide students toward successful academic and post‑college paths.
• Partner with Alumni and/or Employer relations to assist in achieving education and career goals.
• Serve as main point of contact for students and guide them through program options.
• Identify, track, and report metrics on career‑related outcomes such as student appointments, career education engagement, internships, and placements.
• Administer and interpret career‑related assessments and collect data through shared career technology software.
• Report metrics to College and University leadership as requested.
• Evaluate progress and assess programming for continuous improvement of student success.
• Provide leadership in academic and professional advising under guidance of the Assistant Director.
• Train and coordinate delivery of advising programming within the team.
• Provide expertise, support, and direction to advisors in the team, and give input on advisor performance to the Assistant Director.
