Position Summary: The Student Voice initiative advances authentic student participation in decision making across New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) by cultivating youth leadership, strengthening youth/adult partnerships, and building organizational capacity for meaningful student engagement. Student Voice is a portfolio of interconnected initiatives that support students, educators and system leaders in embedding authentic student voice practices across school, district, and central offices.

The Student Voice initiative includes three primary areas of work. First, it is student leadership that includes designing and leading student leadership programs that develop young people's capacity to influence policy and practice within supportive, inclusive learning communities. Secondly, it is professional learning aimed at designing and facilitating learning experiences that strengthen educators' and leaders' capacity to engage students as authentic partners in decision making.

Thirdly, systems capacity building involves developing resources, partnerships, and cross divisional strategies that embed equitable, sustainable student voice practices across NYCPS.

The Student Voice Coordinator reports to the Student Voice Manager as an integral member of the OSPP team aimed at advancing student leadership and advocacy, youth/adult partnership, and authentic student participation in decision making across NYCPS. Under general direction, the Student Voice Coordinator, with considerable latitude for independent initiative and judgment, performs responsible work as it relates to the design, implementation, and growth of citywide student voice initiatives.

In collaboration with the Student Voice Manager, manages youth training and adult professional learning, resource development to increase a system wide impact. The Student Voice Coordinator supports capacity building of an emergent initiative by engaging with multiple stakeholders: students, educators, district leaders, policy teams, central leadership, and community partners. Performs related work.

Student Voice Manager

Key Relationships:

Works across divisions to identify and establish opportunities for youth/adult partnerships throughout the NYCPS. Maintains regular contact with key external stakeholders, including youth led organizations, advocates, and local community based organizations, to identify areas of collaboration.

Responsibilities Student Voice Program Leadership and Development
  • Design and facilitate leadership development experiences that cultivate inclusion, student agency, and youth/adult partnership.
  • Manage all aspects of select citywide student voice programs, including recruitment, program design, facilitation, student support, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Design and manage citywide learning opportunities and events that connect school and district based student voice efforts, designing roles for youth and adults as co-leaders and learners.
  • Coordinate logistics for programs, meetings, training, and events, including scheduling, communications, vendor and procurement operations, and materials preparation.
Professional Learning & Adult Capacity Building
  • Support the design and facilitation of professional learning experiences focused on inclusive student voice practices and authentic youth/adult partnership.
  • Support development of training materials, presentations, and resource guides for school, district, and central office staff.
  • Coordinate logistics for programs, meetings, training, and events, including scheduling, communications, vendor and procurement operations, and materials preparation.
Innovation, Research & Continuous Improvement
  • Research emerging practices and contribute to the development of innovative student voice models and resources to support equitable student engagement.
  • Design feedback and evaluation tools and analyze feedback/outcomes to inform strategic improvements.
  • Contribute to organizational learning and field building efforts related to student voice and youth leadership.
Collaboration and Leadership
  • Collaborate with the Student Voice Director on vision and goals, planning, implementation and evaluation of citywide student voice programs and initiatives.
