English Teacher, Upper School Leave Replacement - Fall 2026

The English Department at Nightingale seeks an enthusiastic, dynamic and collegial English teacher for the  school year to teach 3 classes in our Upper School division for an 8 week leave replacement in the Fall semester. Candidates must possess and communicate high standards for their subject matter, their students, and their teaching practice, and demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional growth and development.

Teaching at Nightingale is a collaborative practice, and teaching teams are expected to develop curriculum, write and grade assessments, and plan together. Candidates for this role should have a broad and deep love for and understanding of literature and language, and extensive experience facilitating student discussions, developing student readers and writers, teaching vocabulary and grammar, and creating a classroom culture centered around the exploration and analysis of the written word.

This is a full time, temporary, exempt position starting mid October 13, 2026 and ending December 4, 2026.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
  • Teaching 3 courses in the Upper School.
  • Employing best practices of teaching English to provide our students with an extraordinary classroom experience.
  • Supporting student growth through feedback, communication with families, and collaboration with grade-level leadership and colleagues.
  • Participating in and contributing to the school community outside of the classroom.
  • Performing duties outside of teaching as assigned by the appropriate administrators.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in English or a related field;
    Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.
  • At least three to five years in teaching English at the Upper School level.
  • Excellent classroom management skills.

SALARY RANGE:

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is $10,500 - $12,500. Nightingale considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, teaching time, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
