Position Overview
The Assistant Youth Educator supports the delivery of engaging, safe, and developmentally appropriate after-school programming for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Under the direction and daily supervision of the Site Supervisor, the Assistant Youth Educator works collaboratively with program staff to create a positive learning environment that promotes students' academic growth, social-emotional development, creativity, physical activity, and overall well-being.
The ideal candidate is dependable, energetic, patient, and committed to building positive relationships with children while maintaining a structured and inclusive program environment.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, develop, and facilitate engaging enrichment activities that encourage learning, creativity, discovery, recreation, and personal development.
- Assist with the development and implementation of age-appropriate lesson plans and educational activities.
- Provide individual and small- or large-group support to students based on their academic, social, and developmental needs.
- Foster positive relationships with students and serve as a consistent, supportive role model.
- Support homework assistance, academic enrichment, recreational activities, arts, STEM, sports, and other program activities as assigned.
- Implement effective classroom and behavior-management strategies to maintain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
- Address student behavior appropriately and communicate significant incidents or concerns promptly to the Site Supervisor and appropriate staff.
- Assist students in developing positive communication, teamwork, conflict-resolution, and social-emotional skills.
- Participate in indoor and outdoor activities, including recreational games, sports, field trips, and special events.
- Assist with daily program preparation, including classroom/activity-area setup, organization, and cleanup.
- Pick up students from neighboring schools and safely transition them into the after-school program.
- Maintain organized classrooms, activity areas, and program materials.
- Monitor program supplies and promptly report lost, damaged, or misused materials to the Site Supervisor.
- Maintain accurate attendance records, student sign-in/sign-out documentation, participation records, and other required program reports.
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with students, parents/guardians, coworkers, school personnel, and community partners.
- Support an inclusive and welcoming environment that respects and celebrates the diversity of students, families, staff, and community members.
- Follow all organizational, school, safety, and program policies and procedures.
- Participate in required staff meetings, professional development, trainings, and program planning sessions.
- Utilize computers, virtual platforms, and other technology as needed to support program operations and youth engagement.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Site Supervisor or program leadership.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Minimum of one year of experience and/or training working with children, preferably in education, elementary school programming, recreation, after-school programming, or another youth-services setting.
- Strong classroom and behavior-management skills.
- Ability to develop and facilitate age-appropriate activities and lesson plans.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to adapt to changing program needs and environments.
- Ability to utilize technology and virtual platforms when required.
- Demonstrated ability to establish positive and professional relationships with children and families.
