Transfer Academic Advisor (Academic Advisor) POSITION DETAILS ABOUT JOHN JAY COLLEGE

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Led by President Karol V. POSITION

OVERVIEW

The Transfer Academic Advisor will report to the to the Senior Transfer Academic Advisor – CUNY Justice Academy on the Transfer Advisement Team.

This position will perform the following duties below in addition to the responsibilities listed in the CUNY Title Overview:

  • Participate in group and individual advisement and registration sessions for all new freshman and transfer students including CUNY Justice Academy students.
  • Work with a case load of students on academic probation to develop individualized academic plans.
  • Advise CUNY Justice Academy (CJA) students at select partner campuses on transition requirements, transfer credit equivalencies, and selection of courses.
  • Disseminate information on John Jay college and CUNY policies and procedures.
  • Serve as information resource on Justice Academy policies and procedures for students, faculty and staff at partner campuses.
  • Co-facilitate Justice Academy events with community college and John Jay partners.
  • Maintain student transition tracking databases and CJA advising email account.
  • Participate in cross-training on data reporting and transition cycle processes on CUNYFirst.
  • Stay abreast of changing institutional information including admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, expanding facilities, updates in college-wide initiatives, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandates.
  • Engage in professional development activities such as joining professional organizations, staying current with professional standards and literature, and building information technology skills to enhance work performance.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, counseling or related field
  • One or two years of direct advising experience with one or more of the following student populations preferred: transfer students, disabled students, or students in academic difficulty
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required
  • Ability to effectively interact with a diverse faculty, staff and student population while representing the Academic Advising Center and the College to internal and external constituents is required.
