FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree‑seeking students are born outside the United States;

they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first‑generation college students. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty‑six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four‑year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees.

Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low‑income students into the middle class and beyond – in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020). Specifically, The Instruction Librarian Will Perform The Following Duties
  • Teach one‑shots, course‑related information literacy classes, and drop‑in workshops;
  • Provide reference services (in‑person, chat, email, and consultations);
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Library Instruction to schedule and assess classes;
  • Develop teaching materials in multiple modalities;
  • Support scholarly communication efforts within and outside of the Department;
  • Produce scholarly research and participate in academic service via committees and working groups;
  • Serve as the liaison librarian to, and provide collection development for academic programs;
  • Teach library credit course, as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chairperson
Qualifications

For the rank of Instructor, a master’s in library science (MLS), master’s in library information studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA‑accredited institution. The candidate will be expected to complete a second graduate degree within 5 years. For a degree at CUNY, tuition benefits are available. Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

For the rank of Assistant Professor, a master’s in library science (MLS), master’s in library information studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA‑accredited institution, with a second graduate degree is required. Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of relevant experience, which may consist of academic library experience and/or experience in other teaching or research positions;
  • Familiarity with lesson‑building tools and course management systems such as Brightspace;
  • Professional and pedagogical commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion;
  • Expertise with digital humanities, ethical use of AI tools, data literacy, or scholarly communication;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with people at all levels in a collegial, collaborative environment;
Compensation

For Instructor: $54,454 - $79,298

For Assistant Professor: $59,256 - $85,556
